Roberts Gravel Pond Report - 56Chevy - 06-08-2010
I went out to Roberts Gravel Pond with my buddy and his little brother. It was raining pretty hard but the fish were still biting, between the three of us we caught 9 small rainbows in a couple of hours. I also caught a little perch. Ive heard there are catfish in there. Is this true? Has anybody ever caught one?

There are catfish there, me and my buddies would go out at night and catch them, they are not huge but it was still pretty fun.

I wouldnt use trout, its illegal to use game fish as bait, check your regs!!!!!!!!!

No it's not . you check the regs . They use trout to catch sturgeon all the time in hells canyon . Also crappie below CJ . Both game fish .

Have to agree w/ Curt. I double checked the regs and it says that live fish may not be used as bait in Idaho but it had no other restriction on use of gamefish as bait. I was a little surprised. It also said that bait could consist of dead fish w/ no specifics on whether they had to be game or non-game fish.

Yeah. As long as the gamefish are obtained legally and according to regulations, you can use them as bait. No keeping an 8" bass for bait if the regs say the minimum is 12" for example. They even sell trout morts from the hatcheries for bait at Sportsman's Warehouse.

We always used a piece of hot dog for bait at Roberts. The catfish seemed to love it. I also tried some of the store bought catfish bait balls and it didn't seem to work as well as the hot dogs did.

I caught 2 bullhead catfish last month during the day from a boat. Went out tonight in the dark and couldn't get anything from the shore/dock. Tried hot dog, worms, corn and some glowing trout beads to see if they helped any. I thought I had some bites, but then I started to figure out it was bats hitting my line, and dive bombing my bobber.
What kind of hot dogs do you use Creed? All I had were good quality falls brand beef franks. I probably should have grabbed some chicken livers and tried those too.

If you do use trout for bait, be sure that you don't have more in your possession than the limit. As an example don't have 7 dead tiny trout minnows when the trout limit is 6 -- doesn't matter if they are 2 inches or 20 the limit is 6.
The exception to that is if you buy trout morts from the hatcheries or a store, but then make sure you have a receipt.
