Carey Lake - idahopanfish - 05-09-2010

A friend and I went there today and had a good time.

The catchin was good for 7-8" perch and the gills and read ears were running up the hot water thick and hit the fly nearly as soon as it hit the water, other wise they were far and few between. The bass caught were not over 8" so I settled in to the perch.

On the fly rod I had a brown Damsel fly and on the UL I had 1/8 orange head chartrues jig below a slip bobber, did best with some bait on the hook. They hit hard and fought hard.

The water was 48 away from the warm water spring, 57 where the gills were and 50 where the perch were. The perch bite was best when the sky was overcast, when the sun came out it slowed down.

Thanks for the report. Did you catch any decent size bluegills? I have never fished carey lake. Might be a good place to take my boys to work on their flyfishing.

I wished you would have cut a couple of them up and sent them back down as catfish bait. I would like to have seen what you would get. Looked like fun, I need to check it out for cats. Ron

I had some minnows with me and did try for a short time to drag one along but the wind was playing havvoc with me and the perch were hitting the fly so quickly it was difficult to run both rods, so I opted for the perch. However to of the people on the bank talked about cats they had caught there in years past from shore and both were at night with worms.

No the gills were all that size and the ones I caught were right there where the hot springs comes in.

You might have to just put that fly rod down and come with me to Carey lake to figure them cats out! Ron

Well Gloria & I went to Carey this Sunday afternoon for some perch fishing and we came home with 14 in and around 7" size, lost the only "big" one while trying to drop it in the fish basket.

Sorry no pic's, Gloria said no! It was breezier and cooler than exspected, so she was swiming in my jacket and a little wind blown. But for me it was awesome to have her with me[cool]

Can you catch those puppies on flies Mike, or are you wasting your time to try? Wish the weather would warm a bit, and maybe the bass would start to turn on.

This weekend I just used worms but last weekend I used a brown damsel. You could probably get away with a sink tip to help to keep out of the weeds. But a red and white jig catches them so I would think even a bright colored jig should do the job as well.

You could strip it in or put it under a float.

When you get there if you go to your left, south, towards where the hot water comes in and fish that channel you should catch plenty, but if you float around and can get to the open water you see from the hwy, I have caught some bigger ones there in the past.

Glad to see that you got out there again. Just too much water and to little time or gas money to get everywhere I want to in any given summer. Sounds like a fun place.

Thanks Mike. I'm thinking of pulling my trailer out and working it over for a couple of days. Probably be after this latest nasty weather goes through. Any legal size bass left in there? I used to catch some larger ones, but it's been awhile.

Not sure about the bass, I haven't caught one for a while but I didn't fish Carey last year at all.

Re: [idahopanfish] Carey Lake - idahoron - 06-02-2010

We were there on Monday and the perch fishing was AMAZING!!!!!! We got there and launched at 8:30. It sprinkled on us for a while. I took a friend of mine to catch some perch. We caught a lot of fish, and that might be a under statement. We kept fish in the 10" range but we did have several in the 9" range. After a while instead of using a jig we just used the jig head. Dan my friend used a bare hook with one crappie nibble. They were hitting anything that was in the water. I am planning on a fish fry so we took home way more than we would normally do.

Michael, I found some of the larger noodles in Target. They are in the toy stuff in the back. They only have the smaller ones up front. Ron
