Trout Jigs - smallmouth89 - 03-29-2010

Hey Pat,

In my tying efforts for my upcoming wilderness float tube fishing for speckled trout I'm torn between bucktail and marabou. I think I should probably make up a supply of both and maybe even combine the materials sometimes. Marabou gives the most lively action but is less durable. Bucktail is tougher and being somewhat buoyant can help you achieve a slower fall when necessary. What are your thoughts?

God Bless,
Don

[cool][#0000ff]Since you and I have had some PM discussions along this line before...and shared some patterns...you know that I favor 'bou jigs. I quit using hair jigs a long time ago...except for some sculpin patterns or big deep water jigs. Yeah, the feathers are more fragile but they have a greater live action that seems to attract more fish. I will trade more fish for durability any day. Plus, whenever one of my jigs gets chewed up I just tie on a new one. I know a guy who makes them.[/#0000ff]

Yes indeed, those are enough to make my mouth water and when you make them yourself the more fragile nature of the "bou" is not really an issue. I was leaning in that direction but have read a lot on smallmouth forums about float and fly presentations where they use hair jigs and wondered if I was neglecting something. Suspending one of each under an indicator in my small test aquarium the marabou wins hands down. Thanks for your respected opinion.

I also have skeins of a synthetic which has all the action of marabou. I think I'll leave the bucktails in the drawer and tie with the marabou and the synthetic yarn which besides the action of marabou has a bit of sheen to it. Funny how you sometimes need to be reminded by a friend what you already know. Always value your experienced opinion my friend. When I get a new camera I hope to have lots of pics to post of my upcoming wilderness tubing trip.
God Bless,
Don

[cool][#0000ff]I have been experimenting with a couple of synthetics for tails too. I have a couple of fly patterns and a couple of jig patterns that use short white tails...and the synthetic white stuff seems to do a good job. I also work in some Krystal Flash in a lot of my 'bou patterns. Kicks 'em up a notch.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I was planning to make up some samples of those trout jigs in some size 4 and 6...on 1/32 oz. heads...for you to play with on the fairy wand.[/#0000ff]
