brand new steelhead setup! - chrome_junky - 03-06-2010 i just bought my first baitcasting setup for steelhead i have fished with my friends before and really liked how light they are and ive always understood how to use them we use to use light ones for large mouth in louisiana. ive always used big heavy spinning gear on steelhead and when i get done at the end of the day my back and shoulders are killing me. For a rod i went with a medium action G-loomis GL2 and the reel i went with abu garcia ambassodor 11 bearing 6;4 gear ratio. im stoked i cant wait to use it sunday!!!!!! FISH ON!!!!!!!! Last Friday I snagged a bush behind me and had a birdsnest so bad that all I could do was start cutting the line with scissors and replace the whole thing. Thats the only time I have had that bad of a backlash. If I wouldn't have had a spare rod it could have ended my fishing for the trip. But I'm sure you know all about the bait casters if you have done alot of bass fishing. Good luck with the new rod and reel. I have used a bait casting set up for steelhead for years and love them. Once you get use to it you will not want to go back. Good luck sunday. I use little lighter, the GL2 medium light but they are both great rods. Yours will do great double duty on Salmon as well![fishin] [signature] Re: [MMDon] brand new steelhead setup! - idahoron - 03-07-2010 Can someone explain the Gear Ratio? I am not sure how to decipher what it means. Ron [signature] Re: [chrome_junky] brand new steelhead setup! - AverysAdventure - 03-07-2010 Good luck gettin' the skunk of the new pole! Ron[/quote] Gear ratio is how fast the spool/bail will turn in relation to the handle/crank. If it is a 6.4:1 ratio, then the spool/bail will turn 6.4 times when you turn the reel handle 1 full turn. The lower the number, the slower it retrieves line, but has much more torque. The bigger the number, the faster it will retrieve line, but will have less torque. A fly rod reel is 1:1. One full turn on the handle turns the spool one full turn. Hope this helps. It is so light it feels like you are not hanging on and it is flying out of your hands at the end of a cast. The sensitivity is absolutely amazing. You are going to be in for a treat with that setup. Good luck tomorrow. Always pack a very small crochet hook with you to dig out the nasty birds nests with. It'll save you some line and a lot of headaches ![]() [signature] Re: [SteelFan] brand new steelhead setup! - me_and_myboy - 03-07-2010 I have used a baitcaster for years when chasing LM in FL. I have never heard the small crochet needle suggestion but I sure am going to keep with me now. That is a great idea!
