Still water retrieve - MatchT - 03-01-2010 Hello everyone, I found information about fly fishing a halfback nymph: "FISHING METHOD: Floating line with 10 -16 Ft leader. Use the count down method to get the fly just off the bottom. Use a slow to medium retrieve (4 - 8 seconds for each hand twist) with a several quick 2 - 3 inch pulls every 15 - 30 seconds. Use the same retrieve for sinking lines. The fly should be weighted if your going to be trolling. " My questions 1. On still water if you are wading i would imagine that you use instructions mentioned...if you are on a pontoon and kicking(trolling)...do you do any retrieving? 2. Not sure what a hand twist vs a pull is yet....I mostly just strip in fast or slow...I seem to catch ok on sinking line..but on a floating setup I'm not getting to many bites with same flies...I imagine a hand twist wraping line around my hand once over? thanks for any tips... match [signature] Re: [MatchT] Still water retrieve - packfish - 03-01-2010 Hand twist- just visualize you retrieving your line in with just 1 hand- not 2 hands. You are not pulling the line at any time. You can retrived from a pontoon boat anyway you can from anything or anywhere else and need to change your retrieve as the situation dictates [signature] Re: [packfish] Still water retrieve - MatchT - 03-02-2010 understood packfish, I've never done this type of retrieve. I've been doing streamers and now that I have been fishing nymphs I know to change my retrieve methods. I hope to get a good kickboat someday and also fish from a toon in the stillwater.... Just ther other day I spotted a blood red larvae in the water wiggling around where I was wading...I added red zebra midges to my fly line with an indicator and landed a fish as soon as my line hit the water...after the first cast I did not get much more hits. I was guessing my retrieve was to fast... [signature] |
