Fly Rod Blank Question - Windsetter - 01-14-2010 I am looking to make my own fly rod this next month, to use during the upcoming year. The question I have is about rod pieces. For those of you fellow Utahns whom have made your own fly rods: I am looking to make a 5 wt, 8'6" rod. 1) I see poles from 2-7 pieces, that it can break down into? 2) Is there a benefit to more pieces? 3) I will be making my own Reel seat and handle. I would like a dark green rod to accent the wood and stain I have chosen. Any suggestions on blanks? Please pardon the "newbie" questions. I would just like the advice of those more experienced then I. [signature] Re: [Windsetter] Fly Rod Blank Question - flygoddess - 01-14-2010 The advantage to multi piece is packability. If you are making your own, that means allot more wrapping in that you have to wrap each ferrule. And it might be a little harder to line up. I learned that you roll the blank in that they all have a slight curve. The more pieces will make that harder to find. I prefer 3 to 4 piece. As for Green blank, it is a popular color, so that shouldn't be hard. Winston, Sage, T.L. Johnson to name a few. Good luck, it is fun!!!! [signature] |
