Mud Lake Update - unobass1 - 12-24-2009 Went out to mud lake today around noon to try for perch. I unloaded the sled at the boat ramp at the southern end of the lake because I knew there were some good weed beds there. I drilled a couple of holes in the middle of the channel that leads out to the main body of the lake and found some good weeds that I thought would hold some perch and didn't get a single hit. I tried probably twenty different spots and got nothing. I've caught big perch in that spot before but I don't think I could have caught a cold at Mud Lake today if I tried. If anyone has been out there lately tell me if you've had any luck. When I was out there three weeks ago it looked like the Sahara Desert rather than the bottom of one of my favorite winter fisheries. Very Sad! ![]() [signature] Re: [unobass1] Mud Lake Update - prvrt - 12-24-2009 This is very ![]() [signature] Re: [prvrt] Mud Lake Update - MMDon - 12-24-2009 The Tiger Muskie option didn't fare to well there. I did see some nice skulls a bird dog retrieved from the bank three years ago. Huge teeth! ![]() I'll see if I can find a pic to post of them! [signature] Re: [MMDon] Mud Lake Update - prvrt - 12-24-2009 Was the problem with the Tiger Muskie the Genes or the Lake itself? [signature] Re: [prvrt] Mud Lake Update - MMDon - 12-24-2009 I think it is oxygen deprivation on the winters with huge ice. If the lake had an aeration system similar to the one installed at Roberts it would probably better support a bigger fish population. As the ice thickens the weed beds begin to decay below the ice using up what little oxygen is left. The results have been huge die offs of perch and other fish. [signature] Re: [prvrt] Mud Lake Update - MMDon - 12-24-2009 I should note that these winter kills usually check the population of the perch from becoming stunted and give us a pretty banner year every other year with some luck! ![]() [signature] Re: [MMDon] Mud Lake Update - prvrt - 12-24-2009 Ah, makes sense since it is so shallow. I had the same issue in my pond when the mice chewed threw my airline. Fish all died. Now I check it once in a while and keep the ice open. I should have some nice LMB and BG this coming summer. [signature] Re: [prvrt] Mud Lake Update - Belasko - 12-24-2009 Now that sounds like a nice place to fish! Let us know if you ever need help checking the population size[ ![]() [signature] Re: [Belasko] Mud Lake Update - prvrt - 12-25-2009 Lol, I have some Perch and Green Sunfish in there also. I do go out and try the new rods I build in the pond during the summer. The sunfish are easy prey. The LMB are a lot tougher to convince them to bite. I need to get a video recorder and hook it up to my underwater camera and make a few short movies. I just hope the BG spawn this year. Last summer they got in the mood a few times, but nothing happened. [signature] |
