Rio braded tippet - pa - 12-17-2009
Hi folks and merry Christmas,
Any one used that braded tippet from Rio? Say it in an advertisement from FishWest Fly shop and was just curious. Smallest in the ad was 5x -10lb.[shocked]

Regular 5X is like 2.2kg and this 5X is 4.5kg I am not sure on how they are rating this.

I agree Joni,
Just can't imagine why a freshwater fisher would need/use tippet that heavy. 6x flouro is about heavy as I ever use.

Ive use something close too this when I am fishing in stained water but mostly at this pay site I play on once or twice a year just for kicks and too get a good laugh when your paying good money too play you do not want too spend the day re tying your gear... You will just blow your guide away when you just start walking back wards with your fly rod too land a big one they will freak out and say wow what are you using lol...... Never used the RIO stuff I tie up my own and its floats crazy or sinks like a intermediate

I count any braided tippet as a gimmick. You pay extra for the process that went into the production... but is it really necessary? I have landed 70 lb fish on 8 lb. test line with spinning gear and the resistance isn't anywhere near on the drag of a fly reel unless you put them on the reel with a lot of tension. I keep it simple. Tippet is for nice lay outs on dries and monofilament is good for nymphing. Why pay a bunch to do what can be done with standard tippet on the surface and mono sub-surface?

Absolutely, and I lost a brand new line because the tippet wouldn't give.

Well... it may not have been the braided tippet. Knowing you, it was likely a new world record carp that would have broken your Redfield if the tippet didn't go first.[laugh]
