Anyone fished Ameican Falls? - CPperch - 12-16-2009
Wanted to hit AF for perch this weekend. Anyone have a report?

I went last Saturday and the fishing was fast. Ice was about 12" thick. We caught a bunch of small perch and quite a few trout. Three trout were right around 2 lbs. the rest were pretty small. I was at the sportsmans access just up from Sportsmans Park.

What do you look for for a good perch locale under the ice? I mean what do perch look for? I have caught some fat nice perch there last year and other trips there were just 4 inchers. I love perch meat and would love to figure out how to consistantly catch them through the ice.Anyone out there have some wisdom in perching?

For the Perch to be of any size you need weed growth under water. Dropping a camera or getting down on your hands and knees will tell you a lot about the size of the fish. No weed growth, small fish. The next thing I look for is an irregular bottom. Perch tend to move along small ridges in the bottom structure. Fishing up against one of these ridges will be much more productive than even 5' away. A lot of times if one rod receives more bites then the rest you can look down there and find that rod is fishing next to weeds or a small ridge running along the bottom.

My buddies have been down there a few times already. The fish are small and not as plentiful as the last several years.
