whities? - iliketofish - 10-22-2009

I hit the Henry's Fork the other day for a few hours, and landed some nice trout, lost a monster (of course), and some giant whitefish. I caught one that measured 20 inches, and another at about 19 but FAT. those were the biggest whities I've ever caught, but I was wondering if anybody has heard of or caught bigger ones. I looked on the F&G website and the record is 22.5 inches. I'm just curious how big they really get.

I caught some 18"-20" whitefish last week in the South Fork (of the Boise) and was wondering about the State Record. I've got to think there is a 23" whitefish swimming around somewhere. Maybe one of us will catch it and become the Whitefish King of Idaho. I've heard they're good smoked.....anybody every tried it?

I haven't smoked them, (I didn't inhale) but I have cooked them before. They are a good, clean tasting, mild fish.

My son was catching them in the Boise river. He gutted them and added some seasoning salt and wrapped them in tin foil. Then he burried them for 5 min in the coals. It was very tasty and the bones came out nice. I would eat them any time I had the chance. Ron

Smoke them babies up. They are one of the best smoking fish in the state. It's a ritual to smoke a least a bucket full of them every winter.

What's the best bait for them if you are after a bucket full?

I usually catch them on a small Copper John in Chartruse in size 16/18.

as has been said already most small nymphs will work, they have little mouths so big things usually won't work although I caught one today on a decent size wooly bugger, and I caught one one time on a rapala (yes it was in the mouth [Wink]). this time of year I catch them mostly on midge pupae, but i've never actually set out to catch whities, they're just mixed in with the trout.
