Cold water sub-surface fly line. - peter805 - 10-08-2009

On my last trip to Sierra one of the lines I was using
was a Scientific Anglers Stillwater invisible sub-surface
WF-5-S fly line that I just bought.
The problem was that the memory was real bad. Off the
reel coils like crazy and after I was troling it for couple of
minuts and striped it back it was just to straight in my
striping apron ( float tube).
It was very cold that day ,maybe 25-30F air temp. and
about 45F water temp.
I remember using some other line last year on my 7WT
and did not have that problem. I dont remember what
kinda line that was.
Does that make any sence ?
Please help me with this .

All of the clear line freezes. You are basically fishing an INTERMEDIATE.
Cortland Clear Camo has been about the best out there. It isn't as subjective to the cold and it doesn't get noodlie in the heat.
I had the ORVIS clear and it was the same as you described.
If you try a PVC coated TYPE I you might have better luck.

There is a new line on the market however. I will do some checking and see if I can find it.
Heard some great things about it.

Ok, I see.
Yes, it is a intermediate slow sink line.It workes like
a dream in worm temp. but not in freezing cold.
If you find out what kinda line is the new one please let
me know.
I was also using full sink type IV (black)line and there was NO problem at all. Its just kinda hard to cast sitting low in
the float tube. but Im sure its more of "casting operator"
problem more then the line.[Smile]
Thank you as always for your input Joni.

P.S: I was using your furled leaders and love it. Thank
you again.
