Oster Lakes Report - Boise_Tarheel - 07-16-2009

Went to Oster Lakes on Tuesday morning with my dad. Fairly busy on Lake #1 as usual, could see trout and tiger muskies swimming by, but could not get any bites on flies or worms. Got a tip that the goldens were hitting marshmallows on #3, we didn't have any but hiked over to check it out. Caught a few small bass and bluegill on worms. Finally got the trout to hit on conehead wooly buggers. It's easy to spot the golden rainbows and it was interesting that they showed no interest at all, but the "regular" rainbows were. We caught 3 nice rainbows, 12-15 inches, then I landed the biggest rainbow I have ever caught, 22 inches and fat. It was getting pretty warm by this time and the fish were done. Went back Wednesday morning to the same spot, armed with marshmallows just in case. No interest at all in the marshmallows or wooly buggers. They were after big mosquitos today, and this time it was the goldens who seemed hungriest. Dad caught two goldens and two rainbows, 12-15 inches or so again. I had never seen a golden rainbow up close, they are beautiful. I was getting discouraged having only caught bluegill so far when I hooked one even bigger than the day before. Measured him at 23 inches and he's not skinny, see pic, pulling him in looked all the world like a salmon. It was getting later in the day again by then and we decided to head out. We didn't catch huge numbers, but the size and quality were great.

They are small lakes/ponds between the state and national fish hatcheries near Hagerman, just off Hwy 30.

Those were not tiger muskies. I am betting they were released sturgeon if they were in the lakes. I think they have some tigers in the viewing pond. Ron
