Getting a bearing on rescuing trusty reels - revrusty - 07-09-2009
Has anybody here replaced bearings in baitcasters? I've got some trusty reels shelved, despite my best cleanings, after they started making noise and/or losing casting range due to bad bearings. I saw a forum ad for bearings, and I'd sure like to have those reels back.
I like baitcasters. Perhaps that's because the pawn shop's rod-n-reel with the best drag for my first wade fishing excursion was a Quantum baitcaster and, well, looked good to me a newby. After many a snarl, I learned to handle 'em. The more bearings, the better, I'm told -- until the bearings go bad. I've got two, a Bass Pro Extreme and a Shimano so old that I can't read the model. Can't find schematics for either, and don't know of a good repair shop in my neck of the woods. Being cheap, I'd like to do the work, so if someone can please point me in the right direction ...

Contact manufacturer and see if there is a repair shop somewhat close by then ask them what you can do. They may have a suggestion or the parts that they can sell you.

I have all my shimano reels serviced by "The Reel Mechanic" or "Big Green Fish". All of my reels have had the bearing and the drags updated.
