if you go up to the top of the page, you will see a link that says "Who's online" and an icon with three little circles. if you click on it, there will be a list of names of people who are currently online, of course. next to some of the names, there will be word in parenthesis that say flat mode. what does this mean???

yes if you click on that you will indeed be taken to a page to show who is currently on line.
flat mode it the selection you made (auto) in your user profile page. you can eather select flat mode or you can select thread mode.
the difference is how you will veiw the post.
to change it click on user profile then Desplay Profile
scroll down to Default post desplay and select one or the other. you can experiment with it to see which one works best for you.
