tis the time for beatles, I need help - dustponds10 - 05-31-2009

Alright I know you all know how to tie up the foam beatles and on small streams and what not there are a ton of small critters falling into the water. If you could please help me in finding or showing me with your own flys that would be great. I dont even know where to start but I know that you all do. Beatles, and ants would help me out a ton. Thanks. Dustin

Re: [dustponds10] tis the time for beatles, I need help - Brook - 05-31-2009

There are all sorts of beetle patterns, Dusten, plain and fancy. Here's how to tie a simple but effective one:

Attatch thread to bend of hook. Tie in a small bunch of deer hair, tips pointing rearwards. Tie in peacock or other herl. Wind herl to eye and tie off.

Gather deer hair snugly and bring forward over the top of the hood, forming a shellback. Tie off and whip finish over the hair.

Trim the tips, leaving a small, hairy mass as a head.

If you want to get fancier, and simulate legs, tie in two wraps of hackle before bending the deer hair over.

Hope this helps.

Basically just a material substitute for the one DR posted.
Personally, I like the foam. Easier to come by and work with[Wink]
