Current Setup (Rod & Reel) - Scruffy - 05-14-2009

I decided to toss out my 20 dollar Mitchell combo for a better set, but I'm not positive I chose wisely.

Firstly, I chose a 7' Shakespeare Ugly Stick Lite, Medium action. It was a great looking and feeling rod and it seems to be extremely durable. My only concern is that its too tall for me, because I am a mere 5'8". Setting the hook seems to be rather difficult at times, but I'm not sure if my technique is the problem.

For my Reel, I paired the Ugly Stick with a Shimano Sonora. I figured that it had a decent 6:1:2 gear ratio or whatever it actually is, and it seemed to do the trick nicely.

For my line, I'm always testing new products. Currently I have on 10lb Spiderwire, green is the color, I believe.

I'm just concerned that I'm not doing something right, I mean, I'm catching fish, but I want to build a suitable Bass Rig that is good with Spinner Baits, swim baits, top waters, etc. Just a good bass rig in general. Any tips? Please criticize.

Sounds like a good set to me... As long as you are comfortable that's all that matters. Its all in preference I am 6' and I use a 5' 6" rod my friend is 5'7" and likes to use 6'6" rods. As for setting the hook goes just choke up a little on the rod with your upper hand that might help. In the end if you aren't comfortable with the rod then keep searching.

That makes sense. I'm also going to try a medium heavy baitcasting rod soon, becuase i'm going to try my hand at baitcasting reels soon. So i'll be researching a good pair soonish.
