Current Setup (Rod & Reel) - Scruffy - 05-14-2009 I decided to toss out my 20 dollar Mitchell combo for a better set, but I'm not positive I chose wisely. Firstly, I chose a 7' Shakespeare Ugly Stick Lite, Medium action. It was a great looking and feeling rod and it seems to be extremely durable. My only concern is that its too tall for me, because I am a mere 5'8". Setting the hook seems to be rather difficult at times, but I'm not sure if my technique is the problem. For my Reel, I paired the Ugly Stick with a Shimano Sonora. I figured that it had a decent 6:1:2 gear ratio or whatever it actually is, and it seemed to do the trick nicely. For my line, I'm always testing new products. Currently I have on 10lb Spiderwire, green is the color, I believe. I'm just concerned that I'm not doing something right, I mean, I'm catching fish, but I want to build a suitable Bass Rig that is good with Spinner Baits, swim baits, top waters, etc. Just a good bass rig in general. Any tips? Please criticize. [signature] Re: [Scruffy] Current Setup (Rod & Reel) - IvanM1 - 05-26-2009 Sounds like a good set to me... As long as you are comfortable that's all that matters. Its all in preference I am 6' and I use a 5' 6" rod my friend is 5'7" and likes to use 6'6" rods. As for setting the hook goes just choke up a little on the rod with your upper hand that might help. In the end if you aren't comfortable with the rod then keep searching. [signature] Re: [IvanM1] Current Setup (Rod & Reel) - Scruffy - 05-27-2009 That makes sense. I'm also going to try a medium heavy baitcasting rod soon, becuase i'm going to try my hand at baitcasting reels soon. So i'll be researching a good pair soonish. [signature] |
