shsimons, Wilson/Wheeler Dams, mixed, 4-3/4-5-09, Slo-Ride - FishNews - 04-06-2009 My girlfriend headed out of town for the weekend, so I had to go fishing with Dave in Alabama. Darn, I hate it when that happens. Anyway, here goes.

We started out Friday night below Wilson Dam throwing sassy shads hoping for a big striper bite. We ended up with 4 white bass and I was wondering if I should have chilled out in Chattanooga. It was a tough start.

We went back early the next morning below Wilson and hit it hard. We ended up with a few white bass where earlier we slammed the stripers a few weeks back. Dave decided to head across to the other side of the dam next to a wing wall. How he has the guts to run his boat there, I'll never know. We both hooked a ton of drum, and he hooked a striper and me one as well. I ended up reeling in his striper since we were headed right for a giant rock and he had to get on the motor. That one ended up being 15 lbs. Later I hooked up and we headed downriver to chase a 16 lber that fought like a terror in the heavy current. We were feeling pretty decent at this point and went and tied up to the wall for some catfish. We ended up with at least 30 from 5-8 lbs on cut gizzard shad. We were fishing small baits as we didn't bring any proper catfish equipment. Then we had an afternoon nap and hit Wheeler Dam. Dave fished the foley spoon and I drifted some threadfins around. I ended up with some blues, drum, and a few small largemouth. Dave topped out with a 3 1/2 lb smallmouth.

Sunday morning we had a tough time at it, but pulled some quality fish. We caught a few small smallmouth and largemouth, then nothing for awhile. They changed the current, and we got into a few nice largemouth, but no smallmouth. We were perplexed by this, as other people were catching them. Anyway, the two big ones were Dave with a 4 1/2 lb, and me with my new personal best largemouth at 6 lbs 13 oz. It was a tank and fought hard. I also had a really big largemouth break me off, which was just another beast. It was like I found a school for about 15 minutes and it was game on.

Dave primarily fishes artificial, and me live bait. I think we make a good combination putting together our ideas. It was a blast Dave, I'm glad I found something to do for the weekend while Kylene was away. |
