Can you guess what it is? - Belasko - 03-16-2009

While steelhead fishing this weekend, my buddy was asked a rather strange question (or so we thought). Everyone we asked along the river was scratching their heads about it too so I figured I would throw the question out there and see if anyone here knows the answer.

What is squiggin' line?

Do any of you have it or keep it in your tackle that you know of? I sure as heck didn't know what it was, but I had it. Let's see if anyone can guess. If no one gets it each day I'll add a clue. If it helps you can try imagining a half drunk redneck with an accent, missing their front teeth, coming up and asking, "Ya got any squiggin' line on ya?"

[sly] I don't know what that is but that's pretty funny!

I'll guess stretchy thread that you use to tie roe bags and such.

Nope, not the stretchy line for roe bags, good guess though.[Image: happy.gif] It would probably make more sense with that.

I thought that is what you seen when you closed your eyes. You try to focus on it but it always moves. [Wink]

No, no, no. You're thinking squiglin' lines, it's squiggin line[:p]

First hint. It usually is sold several to a package and comes in multiple colors.

I would have to guess it is the same thing as "Snubbers"?

Nope, not snubbers. Although that was what my buddy thought at fist too![Image: dumb.gif]

Bobber stops made of line like fly line backing.

Re: [kentd71] Can you guess what it is? - Belasko - 03-18-2009

Close enough. He wanted the nylon string that they make bobber stops with. We were using the stuff where it's already tied on a small plastic tube that you slide the mono through, slip the stop off and tighten. I never would have guessed that as "squiggin' line"

Was this one person saying this or was the whole river referring to bobber stop ties for slip bobbers as 'squiggin line'?

Reminds me of the fly fishing world calling their fuzzy bobbers 'strike indicators.'

The fly fishermens misplaced 'purity' issue annoys me.... That is for another time and another post... I'll save it....

obviously not a fly fisherman.

Re: [chrome_junky] Can you guess what it is? - LoveMyLavro - 03-19-2009

Yes. I fly fish. I use a graphite fly rod. My reel has dacron backing. My reel has a nice drag. My leader is monofilament. My hooks are made of steel. I have expensive, high tech floating line. I also have environmentally friendly sink tip line. I use fly floatant to keep my artificial bait/fly/bug/fuzz/popper looking tasty.

I guess the difference is like a gas/electric hybrid or a diesel/electric hybrid. People have their preferences.

The purity complex of the fly fisher is annoying. That is my conclusion following my observations.

Lol, Gotta love your rants lavro [Image: happy.gif][Image: happy.gif][Image: happy.gif]. as for your question, it was just the one guy that was calling it squiggin' line. We asked several other people we ran into though if they had ever heard of it. No one we talke to had. I would guess we spoke with about 10 other people. Not a big sample size, but with everyone steelheading, I would have figured someone would have known if it was a common term.

bottom line guys put the flie live bait or any thing else you normally use in front of the fish otherwise sit there and talk the talk.

I always thought squiggin lines were lines used by fellas with a pocket full of colored condoms.

i think its some kind of line they tie in between the flie line and the dropper..i also think the guy was intoxicated or inbreed or both.[sly]
