walleye fishing the bear river - jigs - 02-24-2009
I was wondering if i fish along side of any of you on the bear river during the walleye run in the spring, also i was looking for some new set ups i normaly use a 1/4 or 1/8 jig with a 3" curly tail grub.
I have read that those catfish jigs work well i was wondering if any of you have tried them before i go out and buy some.

I don't know what a Catfish jig is, but I use Maniac Minnows on a jig head.

try to arrange a trip with my brother, Trout_Slayer, some time. he runs up there to specifically target them. he usually gets them pretty good right below the onedia dam (like i said before) on nothing more then a piece of night crawler and a few pieces of split shot. i have caught them on a prince nymph bead head off of my fly rod. he usually tends to stick to the deeper holes and has quiet a bit of luck getting them there, and you will have to ask him specifics.

Any tips you can pass along about where, when and with what are greatly appreciated. Like I said before, this is a species that is completely new to us and we are eager to get after them.

from what i have learned about the walleye is they need rocks to lay there eggs on, and about the only rocky areas are up the narrows, as far as what to use. I know alot of ppl that will use a plain old worm, i like to use jigs, and sometimes a rapala.

Walleye swim upstream out of the depths into the shallow's they like rock or rubble shore lines. The males show up first to the breeding beds where the females fallow. the longer day light hours is what kicks the spawn into action along with warmer temp...keep in mind walleye like movement don't just cast a worm and sit and wait... Where its still cold like this go slow...use movements or jigs would be my suggestions for you..Use a line the has low visibility!!!! I like Berkley Premium Strength line....

Do you know if they feed much on their journey to their spawning grounds? There are some nice access points on the river near my house, but they're more on the soft bottom side of things from the look of it.

I dont know that much lol about them. all i know is its easier to catch them now, then in the summer, (i think) now that could be because there in shallower waters, or there schooled up due to spawn, or there eaters when there spawning. i dont know for sure, but from about now tell late april is good eye fishing. i noticed in april the bigger ones come out to play. (females) the later in the spawn the better success i have. anybody else care to jump in and give there 2 cents????

They will lay below a obstical like a rapid, and rest before they venture above it, weather its because they are resting or sitting in the high oxigenated water i am not sure, but if you target the slow water right behind a rapid you will have success. I dont know that they are any more or any less agressive, but they do feed while they are spawning. After they spawn they will find a deep hole and rest for 7-10 days then they go on a feeding frenzie and are very agressive.

Me and a buddy made a trip this weekend and it still seems that the weather being off and on is keeping them pretty quiet. Last year about this time we had caught a few 10 pounders but I can not find my pictures for the life of me. I would say with in the next couple weeks if the weather keeps slightly warmer we should see some better action start up.

i am thinking the warm weather this week will turn them on. I just hope it stays warm and doesnt cool off again. I know of a few that have been caught nothing huge a couple that went 4 lb. But it does seem a bit slow so far this year.

I have caught a lot of walleye on the bear river. I seem to be one of the few that will throw back a big female or a male for that fact. Please do your share of keeping somewhat of a population of walleye by releasing the giant females. Take a picture and throw them back, the little males taste better anyway. The population of walleye in this river has dropped severely in the past 10 years, because nobody will throw any fish back during the spawn or whenever they catch one. They are simple to catch during the spawn, try fishing for them year round and discovering there are not many left, because people are really greedy when it comes to this fish. Lets start throwing some back so our kids will be able to catch some in the future!

Well said, how many is enough. You can only eat so many. If most people fished for them all season long they would see they are harder too catch as the year progresses.

I have talked to people that fish at a spwn hole, that tell me they still have walleye in their freezer from last year. They read the date on the bag and this is how they gauge when to go fishing the next year. Then you will watch them haul out as many as they can that day!! It seems quite ridiculous if you are just throwing these fish in your freezer. Take a couple home to eat and let the population live on. I have thought about bringing a box of steaks down to the river and giving some of these guys a steak if they will throw a walleye back!!LOL[cool]

Fresh is best. Most people only catch them during the spawn. Not many during the hot months, thats the challenge.

Heck, I have yet to catch a walleye in my life![frown] But then I usually have some trouble getting enough time free from home on my day's off to justify a 3+ hr drive to the closest walleye waters. However if anyone knows about a closer spot to Idaho Falls, let me know. If I can find them I'm willing to throw some back just for the chance at them[
