Ririe still on fire - redleech - 02-04-2009 Fished Ririe last night for about two hours and the kokanee did not let up. Last night the larger kokes were right under the ice with the smaller ones deep. Also caught four perch and two trout. I fished away from the crowd, but the fishermen by the boat ramp and island were catching kokanee and perch. They have never ice fished before and I want to make sure they catch some fish. What times where you fishing? So I headed just beyond the rock pile, drilled my holes and waited. And waited. And waited.....nothing! I did manage to get 2 perch off the bottom. Spoke to two other groups and neither had touched a fish since 2:30. I stayed until 6pm and like I said only the two perch.[mad] I can never seem to time that place right so I hope time it a little better! Good Luck[fishin]! What kinds of bait are ya'll using to catch the Kokes? Just worms or jigs or what? Please help! [signature] Re: [curt69] Ririe still on fire - MRCRESTLINER - 02-06-2009 Thanks for the info, I luv to ice fish for the Kokanee, I usually fish Porcupine or Causey here in Utah but they are small this year averaging 10 inches at Porcupine. [signature] Re: [tob04002] Ririe still on fire - Belasko - 02-06-2009 I like to use a kastmaster (1/8 oz) tipped with a mealy or a fish egg. I've also heard wax worms, corn and nightcrawlers work well for the bait. Other lures I've used is krokodile spoons, up to 1/4 oz jigs and swedish pimples or iceflies. They all seem to work if you get where the kokes are. I think the big thing is just get something with a hook in front of them. A lot of people swear that what ever it is it needs to be pink. I've caught enough of those fish on holographics, gold, silver and black lures that it probably just doesn't matter. Just get in front of them when they are irritable and you should be fine. Seems like when they come through you don't need bait, just a small jig of your choice. I have used Hali jigs in orange, blue and white and they all seem to work fine when the fish are underneath us. I never bother to rebait after the first one either. It seems more important to just get something in front of them. If I was going to go out and buy something specifically for kokes it would be either red or pink since that is always what I have been told works best. [signature] Re: [MattinIdaho] Ririe still on fire - windriver - 02-06-2009 I also like the Hali jigs because they get down deep for perch fast, but man they are expensive.[mad] As everyone else has said I swear by pink but I am sure it doesn't really matter. I use either a swedish pimple painted in pink or white. Same reasoning as the Hali jigs, they work well for perch but I can put them in the Kokes face when they come through and they work great. Caught the 3 in 5 minutes and then stared at the motionless rod tips for 4 hours. I kept thinking the next school of kokes was minutes away. Still fun though. I found some Hali jigs in a Utah Sportsmans Wharehouse for $1.99. That is the best I have ever seen them. I stocked up with everything they had. They are a great perch jig if nothing else for the reason you mentioned WR, they get down FAST!![] [signature] Re: [tob04002] Ririe still on fire - maghunter - 02-06-2009 Went to Ririe this afternoon from 12 to 2:30. Fished by the ramp. The schools would come by about every 45 min or so, but they wouldn't stick around long and they were smaller. I could only pull 1 or 2 fish out and then they would be gone. Last two weekends the fish finder would go black with fish but today the schools only had about 15 or 20 fish to them. Maybe all the fishing pressure has broken them up? Still a good time. And it doesn't matter what kind of jig or bait you have up there, I put a different jig on every pole and they all get hit when a school comes around. And after you pull a fish out don't bother putting more bait on just get it back in the water before the school leaves. Talked to several other groups who had their limits of Kokes and where trying to find some perch but couldn't find any. I tried my usual perch spots and couldn't find them either [:/]. They are in the swedish pimple section at the sportsmans in Idaho Falls. You got an excellent deal on the Hali jigs. If I find them that cheap I will buy a handful. The perch in Ririe are one of those things I choose to keep a little secret. However, you can only fish one mile from the dam and there are only so many places that would have suitable habitat for large schools of perch. To be honest, the perch are a challenge I enjoy, they become more difficult with each passing day. I have heard it is because the eggs are growing and they eat less and less as there insides are compressed. Anyone know if there is any biological fact to that hypothesis? Windriver [signature]
