Lost Dog Burbot Slaughter 1/7/09 - UTFSHR - 01-08-2009

We hit Lost Dog last night for a pre-Burbot Bash fish-for-all.

The two of us landed 46 bots total. Fished for about 6 hours. We had a blast! Our Mr.Heater had an explosion and shot 4 foot flames into the ice tent, but hey, it made for good laughs.

Here is what we had to bring home after our burbot breakfast...[inline burbot.gif]

As you can see, we hooked some nice ones, and others that weren't so "braggable".

We used white glow jigs tipped with sucker meat. Light movement just off the bottom or 10-12 inches above the bottom. You have to watch for strikes, because you only get once chance. Sometimes they came in fierce, but most of the slimers only hit once.

I have tried probably 30 different jigs, techniques, etc. The bottom line...if it glows and smells, you can get into the burbot. Even jigs that were just barely glowing will catch burbot.

Stay close to shore and near rocks. If you are out to catch macs and burbot at the same time, good luck. We have caught bots in deep water but the action is slow.
We have found the most success in waters less than 15 feet. Last week I took my Scouts up to Lost Dog and the 8 of us iced 30 burbot overnight. The boys did pretty good at icing the bots especially for it being their first time ice fishing. With the Scouts we fished less than 10 feet from shore and the bites were consistant thru the night.

We should have a good time at the Bash this weekend! I have iced over 200 of these ugly beasts within the last 4 weeks. I

have a pot and and a frying pan in my ice tent, so if you smell hot butter come on over and grab a bite!

Thanks for your report. Looks like we should at least catch a few for the Burbot Bash. What size glow tubes do you recommend? Also, any particular scent seem to work better than others?

Do we really nead cleats. I can't find any 5.00 ones and all the rest are 19.99 and above. X 4 = Ouch.

I have used:
2.5 inch radical glows
4" curly tail green tubes
3 Inch white Berkley glow minnows.

The above items seemed to work the best.

I use sucker meat with an occassional spray of crawfish scent. Seems to work well.

I saw a post a few weeks ago with a BFT member that used the brass cupholders.

Excellent on the ICE!!!!!!

Go to Walmart or a local hardware store and buy two packages of the small brass screw end cup holders. Screw the cupholder into the bottom of the boot and then snip off the hook with a pair of pliers. I was blown away at how well they work. They do not fall off like the strap on cleats.

YOU DO NEED TRACTION ON THE ICE. THERE IS NO SNOW ON THE ICE!!!!!

It is almost to Buckboard. There has been some light ice at Buckboard, but it keeps blowing off. You might be able to launch there.

[Smile]thanks for the report glad to see you caught some nice ones. How was the ice along the edges was it getting soft or any water on it with the warm temperatures. thanks again for the report.

Re: [trfishin] Lost Dog Burbot Slaughter 1/7/09 - UTFSHR - 01-08-2009

Yes the edges are very soft. We had to search around to find a good spot to cross. The water level has dropped about 12-18 inches as indicated from residual ice still frozen on some of the rocks. With the warmer that usual temps, jumping on the ice might be a little difficult.

Step lightly and carry a really big ice sled! That way you can use it as a boat.

In all reality things should be just fine. The lake is a reservoir which raises and fills consistantly. There have been some frigid overnight temps the last couple of days, so I am not even considering the idea of having problems on the ice.

I have a pretty big group heading this way for the clinic, no turning back now!

Awesome report! Looks like it's setting up to be a productive bash. It would be cool for all these "first-timers" to get into some burbot and based on your catch rate there's a good chance. We'll be up there tomorrow night, doing some scouting of our own.......see ya up there. Ryno

Those fish are so beautiful, i can't imagine why you wouldn't want to throw them back. It's Sad that such a horrid fish has to exist. Maybe i'll do my part and go kill a few this winter, nice work!
