whats my name? - Dryrod - 01-04-2009 [center] ![]() [center][inline "Guess 1.JPG"] [signature] Re: [Dryrod] whats my name? - Brook - 01-04-2009 Hmmmmmm? With all those colors my first guess would be that it's a char, rather than a trout. But then there's that medial line. And a question: Is the tail scalped in the pix? Or is it squared off for real, as it would be with a brookie? Maybe a male dolly varden in spawning colors? Then again, it is missing the white tips on the fins... What do I win? My initial guess on this one would have been that it's a parr. Given the tail shape I'd have said a brown trout parr. But perhaps it's a salmon trout? [ ![]() MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] whats my name? - Brook - 01-07-2009 I guess issuing my Patagonia voucher has ![]() Reason is, from the picture, it's hard to tell whether that's a baby or a mature fish. If a baby, then it's carrying parr marks. If an adult, the number of possibilities becomes more limited. It's funny, too, how pictures of fish can affect things. I remember back in the 80s, when, in one year, the Michigan state record brown trout was broken twice. As it turns out, in both cases the fish were Atlantic salmon (Michigan had an aborted project to stock the Big Pond with Atlantics), and it was fishermen, seeing the photos, who identified them correctly. Apparently, even Michigan's own fish biologists didn't recognize the Atlantics when they saw them---one of the reasons the project was dropped. MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [Dryrod] whats my name? - chrome_junky - 01-08-2009 im gonna guess a red band trout not sure what sub species but that is my guess [signature] Re: [macfly55] whats my name? - Brook - 01-09-2009 Mac, I think a salmon parr would have a much more indented tail. No question in my mind the picture is of something in the trout family. But to the best of my knowledge, the Gila doesn't have parr marks. At least not in the adult stage. Plus purebred Gila's are extremely rare, because they readily cross with rainbows. I got a feeling DryRod is gonna stump us all with this one. And then when he reveals the answer we'll all say, "oh, yeah!"
