Catalina fishing - EARLYOUT - 05-21-2003

[cool] When leaving Alamitos for the backside of the Island, does the bait last longer buying at Bill's or buying at Avalon...?

Earlyout: When you go backside or frontside ALWAYS take frozen squid and plenry of it. Lately Bills has not had live squid but plenty of dines. LA Bait (Nacho) has been getting live squid on Fridays and always has the better bait because the receivers are deeper and bigger. Avalon will be the better choice if you want to gamble that they have it. It's a long way over there for no bait. The best place to get the frozen stuff is in San Pedro Commercial Fish Markets near 22nd St. landing. We always carry at least 10 lbs of frozen just in case.Believe me it's an awful experience to be at the island with no bait which can easily happen if you don't plan for the worst

Hey there EARLYOUT,
Do you have a radio or a good talkabout? The baitboats usully have an open channel for boater inquiries on what bait they have on hand.

Gvanzant was right on the money, as usual, when he advised you to take a bunch of frozen squid.

Tonight, the Pacific Carnage is at Catalina and is selling live squid. I imagine the price is higher there than at local bait receivers. When squirters are scarce, imagine how much a scoop goes for AT Catalina! ha ha

I V'E NOTICED MANY OF THE BAIT RECEIVERS ARE ON THE SAME CHANNEL...IS THAT TRUE OVER AT CAT ALSO? ... I HAVE TWO RADIOS HARD MOUNT AND HH.. I HAVE A CHINESE MARKET BY WORK THAT HAS FRESH DAILY...NOT TOO PRICEY BUT THE TRUCK WREAKS BY THE TIME I GET IT HOME...OH WELL, MY WIFE DOESN'T DRIVE IT AS MUCH AS SHE USED TO SO I GUESS IT ALL WORKS OUT...THANKS FOR THE TIPS...

I think the squid boats are on channel 11. and I'd rather get the bait at bill's rather than at the island just incase you see some pretty good marks on the meter on your way there.... just incase.

Hey dh tubinjoe,

I heard a nasty rumor that one boat that catches squid at Catalina on one day a monlth ago was holding out for 200 big ones for the last scoop. If true, get it where you can first.

I think maybe the reason is that there is a DFG reg that says the commercial squid boats??? or brail boats!! can only sell 200 dollars worth of stuff outside of it's regular commercial sales.

Anyone know how that works for sure? It's written in black and white.

I'm pretty sure it's like $50 a scoop regularly. and in a scoop you get arond 150 squid. but 2 bills!?!?! dang! you gotta do whatca gotta do!haha[laugh]
