Rivers End Tackle report - gdn443 - 10-04-2008 Updated by Pat on October 3rd, 2008 * STRIPED BASS - Once again as we put this report together we are in the throes of a weather change. The large baitfish such as bunker and hickory shad are still around in good numbers, mullet are running along the beaches and silversides are here in fair numbers. Some larger bass are taking live baits if you can get through the blues without having your bait mugged. Southwest Reef, Long Sand Shoal and the Bartletts area have had some good ones. The Race and Gut probably have bass but we haven't heard too much about them since those areas are also stacked with blues. Fishing at night does cut down on the blues a bit giving you a little better shot at bass. Watch Hill still has a good population of small and medium sized bass. Montauk has the same with a lot of surface blitzes both in the boats and occasionally from shore. BLUEFISH - I don't remember when we had so many blues around. Theres blues at most of the local rips and reefs with a lot of surface action. Even on some of the faster parts of the tide you can find them on top at the Race, Gut and Sluiceway. Look for them just outside the River on the surface. BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - They're spotty at best. I was at Montauk mid week and they were off the Point in schools of 10-20 fish. They were receptive when you could keep your lures away from the neighboring bass and blues. BLACKFISH- The season opened on Wednesday of this week and it got off to a good start, not many big fish but limit catches were common. Its been blowing since then, but we should have a good weather weekend for blacks. An 8.5 pound fish is leading our contest and that was caught from shore. -- Pat Abate Rivers End Tackle 440 Boston Post Road Old Saybrook, CT 06475 (860) 388-2283 [#003399]info@riversendtackle.com[/#003399] [signature] |
