Giant Crayfish! - MattandNick - 09-10-2008

Matt and Nick's last vacation before school took them to their Granny's house in Big Bear Lake, Ca. They put out a crab trap at night while fishing for catfish and found about 4 dozen giant crayfish. Turns out the Big Bear municiple water department introduced these freshwater giants from Australia back in the 50's to help clear the lake of weeds.

[Smile]Back in 1962, while fishing in the Conowango Creek in NY, I caught a crawdad that was about 10 inches. Could that have been an Austrialian crawfish?[crazy][fishin]

Maybe, I did a Google search on Australian freshwater crayfish and found some web sites that say there mature size is 12 inches long. The ones in Big Bear seem to have no problem with cold weather either as that lake is at around 7,000 foot altitude and gets a thin layer of ice during the winter months

Crawfish are so good to eat. We have a bunch of recipes for them on the recipe board. Feel free to borrow or add any of your own there.[cool]

Nick's little brother Grant was having lots of fun with the crayfish until he got nailed by one.

I'll check out the recipe board next time we get a bunch of the mud bugs. For this bunch we split the tails and claws, leaving the shells on, breaded them with an light Asian style coating and fried them. I've had lobster cooked that way before at a Chinese resteraunt but can't remember what it is called. The crayfish were tasty cooked that way.
