Reel gear grease??? - Old_Chipper - 09-06-2008

I understand that fishing reels need a really good grease and oil. But just don't believe we need the $11 an oz stuff. What in the world are these major brands adding to their products to make them worth this much? I used to work with NASA, we didn't spend that much on the special lubes we needed! If I'm missing something here, PLEASE set me straight. I value your option!!!

There is a product called Penn (name brand) Lube. It is around 4 bucks for a 1oz tube. It may be difficult to apply to some of the need areas so I use another option by Diawa.

The have an Oil with a small blunt needle on it that helps to apply the oil right where you need it every time. @ 2 bucks at most sporting goods stores for a 3oz supply.

As far as grease goes, I use a White Lithium Grease in a spray can from Home Depot or Lowes. It runs around 4 bucks for an 11oz can. 1 can will last you for many happy years.[cool]

Abu-Garcia Reel Lube is generally my go to when I work on reels, Penn Lube is good generally good for area coverage. The Abu-Garcia oil is great for your drags while the Penn Oil is lighter and generally better for your bearings. I will say that for my gears I use the Abu-Garcia Lube due to the fact it holds better. In most situations when I am soaking the bearings I generally mix the Penn and Abu oils for a mid range consistency, then I soak the bearings in there over night.

Now if your working on Shimano Bait casters remember to use your drag grease for your fighting drags.

Tight Lines,
Peter
