Report from Rivers End Tackle - gdn443 - 07-19-2008 Updated by Pat on July 18th, 2008 STRIPED BASS - Theres still some jumbos in the Sluiceway and Long Sand Shoal but its a small window when they are hitting and you need live bunker or hickory shad. Most of the other local reefs A few are being taken on eels and chunks if you can't get he live ones. The bunker have been scarce after daybreak in the River. The Race has been producing smaller bass primarily at nights. Plum Gut also has some small to medium sized bass on night flood tides. Theres some schoolies at the Breakwater and along the Old Lyme beaches with the tube and worm being the best bet. Depending on who you talk to, its either the best of striped bass fishing or the worst, with few opinions in between. BLUEFISH - Theres some good sized blues in the River mostly if not all are being caught on bait. Some smaller surface feeding blues have been showing up on the west end of Long Sand Shoal. The usual summer action is going on with fair reliability at the Race on both tides, Plum Gut and Pigeon Rip on the flood. SNAPPER BLUES- Just starting, about 4 inches long. FLUKE- Some doormats are still coming out of the depths of the Waterford to Hatchetts. Its been good if you have the patience to settle for a couple to six hits in a tide. Theres a pretty good shot that one of those hits will be a doormat. Theres decent action in the Connecticut River, Soundview and Long Sand Shoal. The short to keeper ratio at those spots is still running about 20 to 1. The Rhode Island reports have been slow on the western end of the south shore but its been hot towards the Point Judith to Moonstone area. Block Island is still in the dogfish house. PORGIES - Most of the reports we are getting are from shore based anglers who are doing fair to very good at Rocky Neck, Niantic and Hammonassett. A few catches were reported from Hatchetts. BLACKFISH - There hasn't been a lot of effort but a few anglers we spoke to did well at Hatchetts with a lot of shorts. BLUE CRABS - A few nice sized ones are coming out of the Oyster River, the first reports from the Connecticut River are coming in from the Coves. WERE INTO SEASONAL HOURS NOW Mon - Fri. 5am to 7pm Sat - Sun. 4am to 5 pm THE 2008 TIDE CHARTS and REGULATION SUMMARIES for CT, NY, and RI are AVAILABLE IN THE SHOP. [signature] |
