East Canyon - 1 crappie and a lot of trash - Tronner - 07-14-2008
Fished East Canyon on Saturday and, with the advice of a few BFT members caught my first Crappie (need to resize pic) on a tube jig in about 5' water about 10' off shore. Yep, after 26 years of fishing, I never caught a crappie until Saturday.
However, I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed an absolutely horrible amount of TRASH around this reservoir. I made a point to carry out some garbage, but really lacked the ability to take care of more as i didn't have a garbage bag with me and used plastic Harmon's bags for trash. I'm not trying to sound high and mighty about leaving things pristine, but I saw FOUR USED DIAPERS and enough discarded clothing to dress a typical family; not to mention the assorted cans, bottles bags and boxes. Is this a huge problem all around the state or perhaps just the post-4th of July detritus.

[#0000ff]The trash problem is everywhere. What gripes me is that the people who pack in the stuff can't pack it out just as easily. At Utah Lake the other day, right beside where we launched, there was a big carton of beer bottle empties (see pic). The trashers had taken the time to collect all their bottles back into the carton and then had just tossed it into the bushes.[/#0000ff]

Well that confirms it, there are Crappie in East Canyon. Time for me to start spending more time trying for them in that lake.
What were you using if I might ask?
Was the shore brushy? I pounded the brush on Friday and caught only Bass. The flooded brush sure looked like perfect crappie water, but nothing.
Any tips you could give would be great. PM me if you don't want to broadcast to much.

I was just using a little root beer colored power grub pattern. I'm just barely getting back in to spin fishing and so I'm really not sure what it was other than that. I was not around brushy shore, but was on the rocky bank near inlet as you're coming in from Parley's Canyon. There was a campground there, but it has been barricaded off. There was a lot of vegetation in the water, bu not on shore.
Although I was using a very slow retrieval when he hit it, I have no idea if this was the reason or not. Nothing produced before or after, so who knows.

I do not fish EC much it seems there is alot of trash and the people there are across the border type[unimpressed], not trying to say all are bad but it seems thay are always having partys and leaving there junk, I also packed out 3 bags of garbage about 3 years ago after a family got done craw-dad (sp) hunting, and the BEER cans were every were, get drunk , fish and leave your things for others, I find this alot with EC, more than rockport, willard strawberry,and other areas, all we can do is try and teach them to respect the area.

Well - I just saw the trash so I can't comment on any ethnicity of any group. However, I did go up again last night (because I'm hooked, pun intended) and took with me a garbage bag and rubber gloves. Left with a full garbage bag (but the diapers stayed put, I ain't a touchin those.)
Did catch a half dozen SMB on a 4" tube jig - no camera, but a lot of fun.
