I am head to the Berry Sunday and want to try to hook up with Kokes and Bows, I have no problem getting cuts, but never any bows or kokes. I enjoy trolling, but jigging is also great as well a casting. (bait fishing is tough for an impatient guy). I appreciate all your expertise.

Rainbows are more likely to take flies, and they are usually located more shallow closer to weedbeds than cutts.

Strawberry is an extremely productive body of water and as a result the rainbows tend to stay in shallower water and are often right on the bottom (I have previously confirmed my observations with the UDWR). Both of these factors make it difficult to catch them trolling. For some strange reason, I have been able to catch them fairly consistently (more so than anywhere else) in the narrows trolling deep (50 feet or deeper) with a downrigger; however, all of them have been less than about a foot long.

Also, I have caught far more rainbows on the Soldier Creek side. No idea why they are more common over there.

Just troll rapala's shallow 16 ft or less you will catch bows.
rapala colors,Rainbow,Gold/Black back. troll slow over weed beds.I had no problem catching bows last week,they where all small though.[mad]

50' at the most,they don't care much I think you could catch them in the prop wash if you tried.If you troll big rapalas in the same area's just under the surface at 100' back in the morning you can catch big cutts.I usually use my electric bow mount when I do that.but the bite is over when the sun hits the water.any shallow bay with a deep weedline is the best.

The best success I have had for bows has been right on the bottom in relatively shallow water (10 - 20 feet) using flies moved very slowly. When I have checked their stomachs they are full of sowbugs and crayfish. I imagine a jig on the bottom might work.

I my self have never caught a bow on jigs? I don't know why?
but I agree with you allot of the bows I have caught have been on power bait,fished on the bottom.but have caught allot more fishing the weed line trolling rapala's.I dont fish with power bait much.

[font "Times New Roman"][#000000]Since you like to troll why don't you put some weights on a 3-way swivel and tie on a 12-36 inch leader. Then on the end of that, put on a kwikfish in different sizes/colors to see what they like. If they don't want kwikfish put on crippled herring. Go out to points or bays or where the underwater contour changes and bounce that weight along the bottom if that is where the fishfinder is showing them. [/#000000][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"][#000000]This way, you can troll water less than or more than 20 feet very easily. And if you snag, most of the time all you lose is your weight. If they don't want big baits, use some real light line and tie on a second leader to the kwikfish or crippled herring and put on some fly on the end of that. I have caught many rainbows this way, as well as trolling tubes with a small fly behind them.[/#000000][/font]

[font "Times New Roman"]The points by Renegade and along the walls in the narrow spots and sloping bays are good places. There are 'bows all around though. But some spots are better than others.[/font]
