High Mountain Lakes - ChrisTheFish - 06-07-2008
I would like to start fishing some High Mountain lakes this season. I've been curious about where I can find them. I know about the upper Pali
es lakes, but I was wondering if there were some others that are within a couple hours drive and are in Idaho. Also, if there is any other info on them, it would be appreciated. It sound like a fun thing, but I don't know too much about it.

a good one that is within 2-2 and 1/2 hours away is Warm Lake. it has really good planter trout fishing on fly, lure, and bait. its pretty deep but in the early mornings and late evenings you can get good dry-fly fishing going along the weed line. theres also some creeks there that are pretty good in late summer for fly fishing. and it is close to Horsetheif reservoir too.

I am looking at fishing many of the same kind of lakes this summer. I do not have a lot of personal experience with Idaho high mountain lakes because as my name implies I fish the Windrivers in Wyoming every summer.
You could try lake aldouis sp? out by Kilgore. There is pack
dle out of the Teton valley. Horseshoe lake is not a hike but it fishes like a high mountain lake at times out of Ashton. I will be fishing several yellowstone lakes this summer. Grebe lake is one of my favorites for Greyling. My wife is getting my yellowstone license for fathers day.[

There are literally hundreds of hike-in lakes in the McCall area. The Fish and Game used to have a booklet describing them, but they are hard to find. More recently, a book has been printed describing the trails, difficulty of hike, and fishing. Some are only half-mile hikes, and can be terrific fishing. The Sawtooths would be closer to you, but can be crowded. The White Clouds get far less pressure. You didn't say whether you want a drive-in or hike-in experience. Mike

Most of my experience has been in central Idaho, the Frank Church Wilderness area has numerous different alpine lakes that offer excellent fishing. Depending on where you're starting off from, it could take more than a couple of hours to reach most of the trailheads. One nice alpine lake that you can drive right to is Iron Lake. Excellent campground and there's a second lake that's about a quarter of a mile below if you follow the outlet.
You can also hike over to Hat Creek Lakes from the Iron Lake campground. It's a difficult hike but there are some really nice lakes back in there. In fact, I've attached a picture of one of them.
Bayhorse both upper and lower are also lakes that you can drive to and can hold some pretty nice fish. The upper lake requires a 4wd to get into it, although it's not too far to hike it and you can drive right to the lower lake in just about any vehicle. All I know is that with the heavy snows from last winter and the cool Spring we're having, gaining access to most alpine lakes this year will be at least a month later than usual.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I sure don't mind exploring, but it always helps when you have some suggestions of where to start. Also, I didn't realize that you could drive to any high mtn lakes. When I asked the question it was more geared to hiking, but that's great that there are some that can be driven to.

Another place is Iron Bog lake if you like to hike. There are actually 7 lakes in the area all accessed by hiking. There are some nice fish in 4 of them that I have fished. There is a camp ground called Iron Bog a few miles before the end of the road. You get there by taking Antelope Rd. just north of Arco/Moore. The hike is about an hour or so for average people. There will probably be snow still on the trail in the shade, but nothing that should be to bad.

The only thing that I know about it is that it is easiest to access on the Teton valley side of the mountain. My venture scout group went there last year and said the fishing was good. They were doing a live off the land type of high adventure so the fishing must have been alright non of them starved to death.[
