Steelhead report - maghunter - 04-12-2008
Well I went Steelhead fishing for the first time on Friday. There was three of us, one guy caught three, the other caught one, and I got skunked. We went about a quarter mile below the Pahsimeroi river, There was alot of fish caught up there yesterday, I saw a couple of different guys land six or seven each (there was also several other people who got skunked just like me). The guy in our group who caught his limit happened to be fishing next to a guy who was doing really good and after he caught his limit he showed him what he caught them all on, it was a little tiny orange egg fly, we didn't have any flys like that so he gave him one, he had his limit about an hour later and brought the fly over to us, my buddy caught his fish, the very first cast with the little egg fly. And then while he was getting the hook out it finally had enough and broke [
]. That little fly caught 4 steelhead [shocked]. Since I had never been steelheading before my steelhead tackle was limited to corkys, yarn balls, salmon roe, shrimp, rubber worms and helgies. Non of them worked very good yesterday, I think because the water is so clear, all that stuff was scaring the fish off and they wanted something small and simple. Non of the fish I saw caught near us had a corky on the rig? So if you go up there think small and simple. Even though I didn't catch any it was alot of fun and I'll be up there again, this time with a bigger tackle box full of little egg flys.[signature]

Hey thanks for the report. I'm going on the clearwater next week. It's a different river, but I'll be sure to take some little egg flies along. Good luck if you get out again!

Were you fishing the huge pool by the hwy? I wanted to fish that when i was up there but i never got to. Sounds like an awesome trip. How big were the fish? Any wild ones?

We were fishing right next to a bridge and a campground, I am not sure of the name of the bridge. There was a big hole further up stream that was loaded with people fishing with big bobbers. None of the fish our group caught were wild, and they were all about the same size 5 to 6 pounds or so and they were all Hens.
