Lately a post or two has got me thinking about night fishing. I’ve read some articles, and you hear all the stories about big fish being reeled in after dark. To me it sounds interesting and exciting, a whole new level of fishing. Can any of you shed some light on this dark topic? Or maybe a night story or two?[/size][/font]

This is certainly no secret so I will go ahead and tell you that in the Fall Oct, Nov, many night owls come out to play at the Pali
es Dam under the lights. This year the water was low so the snag monsters came out in force. Everyone has their favorite spot some closer and some farther from the dam. I have caught fish using white 3" tube jigs tipped with minnows or worms, Rapalas, and a double fly rig. We use a heavy weight on the bottom and then rig the streamers above the weight. Every night is different, but it is always interesting. Make sure you bring a strong head lamp, and a lantern so that you can retie with ease. You will snag up and lose gear. We usually fish from about dark until 2 A.M. It is cold, but it is a fun social event kind of like ice fishing. I have also caught fish after dark float tubing at 24 mile Res. In late July. There are times when the fish go crazy as the water cools in the evening. I was just stripping leeches.

I've actually done quite well on the reservoir there at Pali
es at night. Fishing right next to the intake area for the dam. The fish love it there because the meals are brought to them, and they get really active at night. Like Windriver said, you need a good headlamp and lantern for the endeavor, but it can be a blast. I tend to hit it in the fall when the water's a bit lower as well.

[black][size 1]Hey thanks guys for the info. I've been talking this night fishing thing with some of my buddies and I'm definitely going to try it. In fact, I’m thinking about setting up my jet boat with lighting on the bow for some night trips on the river. At first thought it sounds scary. I’ve been in and seen other boat wrecks and gravel bar snag-ups in the daytime, let alone at night. But after mulling it over, if I had some good light out in front and only fished parts of the river I’m very familiar with I think it could be done safely. Unless there is some kind of night regulations on boats and waterways?[/size][/black]

We've landed quite a few 5 to 8 foot sturgeon at night. Talk about addin a whole new level to that endevor. Throw a few barley pops in to make thisngs sloppy and you'll see why we always wear life jackets. I have on buddy that requires a life jacket and a football helmet, but that is another story altogether.
