Some of my favorites are the Okuma Catalina line of reels.

From CT 30 CS high speed to the CT 45c and even the CT 55C. They are great reels and hold up will under the stress of playing tug o war with the Yellowtails on the west coast.[cool]

I use the FinNor 6500 Offshore spinner and crank in yellowtail up to 5 pounds with no problems.

Hey skipper. Have you seen the California Yellowtails?? Them dudes get up to 55lbs. I like the east coast Yellowtails on light spinning gear. They are a blast.[cool]

Thank you for the fast reply and I just got back from buying the Okuma CT 45C so I will let you know how things go here pretty soon.

Nice job and nice fish in your avatar. I just love them California YT in all their glory.

By the way, Welcome to Bigfishtackle. We are glad to have you here and hope you can share a few fishing reports with us too.

We do have a Cali board for all the reports and pics. You can also share them here on the Saltwater section. Eventually they will be moved down to the Cali board but I like to give them some time for others to see as well.[cool]

I didn't even think about the other coast, silly me. Well in that case I use the Quantum boca series reels for Amberjack which would be just like fighting one of the west coast yellowtail. Most of the fish are 30-50 pounds with plenty getting near 70. A few weeks back I landed a 93 pound monster. I run 50 lb mono with an 80 flouro leader.

I used to love fighting the AJs. They are also a good light line fish when you have enough line on the spool.

California Yellowtails can be the same way. I did a few line tests that enabled me to bring some big boys to full color with 15lb test while trying to keep them out of the weeds.

Other anglers were getting broken off with 60lb test while trying to play tug o war with them.

When I pesonally don't know the angler, I will always suggest bigger setups. If I am working for the JP on a boat I will usually kick it up a notch so that I don't get spooned and the crew gets the JP.

You got to come out some day. You will have a blast with some West Coast fishing.[cool]
