[cool]Hey, Chris, what happened? Have you got bad forum breath or something? Some of the regulars have been putting in some long hours and don't spend as much time on the site as they used to. There's gotta be someone going out this weekend.
I'm going out on Saguaro Lake, over near Phoenix tomorrow morning, but I'm not sure if I will get out over the weekend. Have some "projects" to take care of, and the weather is supposed to be iffy...with the chance of some thunderstorms. We need the rain, but I'm not very fond of wind and lightning. No electric float tube for me, thank you.

[cool]You remind me of me. It's hard to be patient when you are on to something new and you just wanna spend all your time at it. All I can say is that if you keep at it, and learn the right way, you will succeed in not only getting a legal...but probably some real "barndoors" too.
Hey, there are lots of guys who are halibut specialists, and real pros, who don't always get legals. There is a lot of pressure on the fish, and the big ones don't get big by being easy...or stupid. But, it isn't always total skill that gets them either. I have seen some real big halibut taken by anglers on their first trips...often while fishing for just anything that bites, and not even thinking about halibut. I like to see the happy looks on their faces, but then I want to punch them out for catching my fish too.

[cool]Halibuts will eat almost anything, when they are in the mood. But, hair and feather jigs are a good way to go, if you can't get live bait or if you would rather toss artificials anyway. Fish them by themselves or with a plastic twister for additional length and action...with the wiggly tail.
One thing to think about when tossing jigs for "Old Hal"...is to use the lightest heads that will get the job done. You know how touchy they can be even with live bait. It's just as bad with artificials. A slow fall and a steady swimming action retrieve will get you bit better than a heavy plunge into the bottom and a bottom dragging or hopping retreve.
An effective approach with the float tube is to toss out a short cast, let it settle to the bottom and then do a slow back troll, keeping the jig just above the bottom. If you have a nice, light swimming action jig, you can cover a lot of water and you will get bit.
Colors for hair or feather jigs should be all white, white and blue, white and red, black and white or even green or brown and white. These colors do the best job of representing the baits most appealing to the flatties. But, don't be afraid to use some wilder colors...especially in cold or murky water conditions. Use something highly visible like all black, black and chartreuse, black and hot pink, chartreuse or hot yellow, hot pink, etc.
I tie all of my own jigs, and I use a lot of synthetic fibres in with the hair or feathers. A few strands of something flashy, like Krystal Flash or Flashabou can give your jigs some extra appeal...especially in clear water on a bright day.
I have caught a lot of 'buts on jigs, and I know a lot of other guys who have also done well on them. These days there are a whole bunch of really good lookin' plastics available, and they do a good job on all species...including halibut. But, the hair jigs have always worked fine, and will still get fish.
The key to fishing a jig is in how you present it. Jig fishing is an art that takes a lifetime to learn. They work well enough that a basic cast and retrieve will catch fish...sometimes. But, if you really want to "kick 'butts", you need to practice different styles of presenting and retreiving your jigs.
What sizes and colors of jigs do you have right now? And, do you also have any swimming plastics...like the Hammer series?

][font "Comic Sans MS"][size 4]haha i have some big ones like 3 1/2oz jigs but then i have some bonito jigs like 1/2 oz but thats all i got. the bonito jig is red and white and the 3 1/2 is green and black and white with sparkles. i also have some blams and fish trap plastics like 3 3/4 lenth and the wams are like 4 1/2 i dont know for sure on those. well thanks for the advice.[/size][/font][signature]

[cool]Hey, Chris. If you are gonna get serious about this stuff, send me an email or a Private Message on this forum, with your mailing address. I will send you a few of the custom glitter heads I make and some plastics to go with them. The 1/2 ounce stuff you have will probably work, but for close in casting, with 10 to 12 pound line, you should go down to something around 1/4 to 3/8 ounce...for plastics or other jigs from 3" to 5" long. You can get some big fish on the 7" and larger, but you will get bit more with the smaller stuff. And, some pretty big fish will eat the smaller jigs too.
Save the big stuff for the boats. When you get in your tube you are in finesse country.
