Im new here - real-burner - 08-23-2007
This site looks awsome. I've been trying to find a fishing forum where I(being 13) can sign up without haveing to mail somthing in. I live in texas and love to surf fish and peir fish, is there anyone else from texas here on the forum.

I am not from Texas but I have fished there as well as many other places.
I am glad that you have found comfort here on the site. I hope that you grow to like it the same way that many of us had. We are getting more and more younger anglers on here as members but you would hardly know it because a young angler has a lot more maturity than others of his own age that don't fish.
What area do you fish in Texas?? I'm sure I could give you some pointers or answer any of your questions that you may have.
We do have a few other members that are also familiar with the Texas fishing.

First let me say welcome aboard, feel free to look around.
I'm not from Texas but I live in Florida on the Gulf side so a lot of our fishing is the same as what you do. If you scroll down on the main page there are individual states listed if you don't find what you need in the Texas section drop by the Florida forum and see what our pro guides are saying about fishing Florida. Many of the techniques can be applied to your area. What type of fish are you targeting?

I fish in galveston mainly for 2-6 foot sharks and anythingelse i can get my line to of the galveston fishing peir or one of the great fishing beaches : stingray, spanish mackerel, redfish, things like that.

During the summer months, you can target Red Drum as well as the Blacks. Hammer heads are a delight and like to congregat in the channel just below the University. Just fish off the points for smaller fish and in the cove areas for the Sharks.
Stingrays will also hang around the cove areas but more towards the East side towards open water.[cool]

I like your signature as it is very true. A little tip for you when targeting hammerhead sharks, they love stingrays. If you can get a smaller sting ray to use as biat it is like candy to a hammerhead. The hammer is like a metal detector that they sweep along the bottom to find food. Stingrays are a mian source of food for hammers so you can really test that big fish/big bait theory.

Welcome to the boards!
This is truly an awesume place to pick up tips and advice on fishing. I have a son that started fishing with me when he was 3 years old. He would not want to quit when we had to leave sometimes! He is a nut for it even today. It is always "Just one more cast before we go!" LOL ! I think I created a monster ! But we do love it when we get together and go for a day. He just got out of the Marine Corps. Did his time in Pensi. Fla. He has turned out to be a fine young man (Not that this Dad would brag!) and has a real good family. His wife and two sons. We are getting them into the fishing now and they are 1 and 7 years old! There never is a "To early" age to start! We all love it and just spending the time together makes for great memories. If you fish in Galviston, TX try to get to the 18th street pier sometime and look up Captin Sandy. She is my partners sister and is retired and loves to teach people how to fish on the pier there. I have added her pic to this post so you know who she is when you go there. Or you can ask around for Captin Sandy to someone will point her out. Tell her that Keith said to look you up ok? Dougs Partner. She is a fun person and loves the pier rat thing. It is in her blood. She will help you to as she does anyone who asks.
Good luck with the sharks and count your fingers when you unhook em. LOL!

Thanks, I have been trying to catch a hammerhead for so long, I have hooked up with a large one on a hole mullet before but you know what happens when you hook an estimated ( it jumped
250 pound hammerhead on 30 lb test with 200 yards on the reel. 
I want to try to upgrade and have gotten good info for a 30lb rig from tuben2 but i want somthing alittle bigger too for that 8 footer. I was the thinking something on the line of a 9/0 senotor (senators are in my price range) and a 6 foot rod. This will be for a boat and im thinking of putting 80-100 lb test on it. If you have any suggestions please tell. Thanks

I think you have the right idea, a 9/0 is a nice big real, it can handle 80 lb with no problem. If you are looking for extra capacity try using braided line, it is a thinner line and you can get about double on the reel. If you select 80 braid be sure to put a little 20 lb mono on the reel first then add the braid over the top. The mono will keep the braid from slipping on the spool. Also if you spool up with braid be sure you spool it on very tight so the line will not get burried in itself while fighting those big sharks.

In addition to what Capt Joe said, use that on a 4/0 and you will be much better off. You can put a base of 20lb like the Capt said and then top it off with about 600yds of 65lb or 80lb braid.
Attache that to a 100lb Steel leader that is 2' long. You could go with a longer steel leader if you went with a little bit longer rod. Add a sliding weight on the Mono to help keep the bait on the bottom.[cool]
