South Fork, ID - Tarponjim - 07-24-2007
Just spend three days floating the South Fork of the Snake in Idaho from Pali
es down through the canyon to Byington access (about 38 miles of river). Flow was around 11,000 cfs. Fishing was good in the riffles from mid-morning throughout the day. There were caddis, PMD's, and yellow sallies flying around, though none "heavy." Fish were just looking up. Elk hairs, stimulators, and larger parachutes (adams worked fine!) all brought up cutts from 12-18 inches. The mayflies seemed to be getting the most attention. Didn't get any real big fish, but only fished dries, and the action was good in every riffle. The hot spots were the seams below any island or break in the main river current. Any downed wood held fish too. Evenings were also good with caddis and spinners on the water. Weather was hot and sunny, but nights were comfortably cool. Lots of agressive, flesh-eating horse flies, but very few mosquitos.
