Surf Fishing Rig - csm - 07-17-2007
My original goal was to build two surf fishing rigs - one smaller set up (Shimano Stradic 5000 reel + St. Croix Premium 8'6" rod) and one larger set up (Shimano Stradic 6000 reel + St. Croix Premium 10' rod). Now my goal has changed - I'm trying to build one good, sorta do everything, surf fishing rig.
Now for my questions...which of these set-ups would be most "versatile"? Is the 5000 large enough for the amount of line I'll need or should I go with the 6000? Should I consider the 8000? Would the 10' be a better all-round option compared to the 8'6"? Last question...what pound line would be best suited for an all around set up?
I've surf fished for many years, but have always used my uncle's gear. I've decided to get my own rod/reel, but I'd appreciate some well-guided advice. Thanks in advance.

Are you on the East Coast, West Coast, Texas, Western Florida, Alabama, Mississippi or Baja California??

East coast, specifically NC and SC coast. TYpe of fishing usually consists of 2-3 ounce rigs with shrimp or mullet - targeting blues, whiting, etc. Nothing fancy, just enjoy fishing the surf and wanted to set up a nice rig that I know will last many years and allow me the flexibility to change my mind to fish other things/ways, etc.

I would be more inclined to use the longer rod. It will come in handy on those windy days. You can always get a different reel with lighter line if you wish or just use the 6000 model reel with 15lb test line.
If you decide to go for bigger species, bump up to the 8000 and put on some 20lb line.[cool]

I would suggest you to go with even longer rod for better casting distance. Maybe even 13' which are widely popular in Europe.
