I've heard various reports on the Smartcast systems around here from the breakwall and pier fisherman on the Lake Michigan Harbors.

What I've gotten out of it all was to only buy the RF15 series in the Smartcast line of sonars.

Guys attatch a different rod and reel to just the puck (transducer) only - cast the puck out -then- fish with their other rods.

A bunch of those guys I talked to won't leave the house for the pier or breakwall w/o 'em! .. actually I witnessed why, too. they do work.

If you found a cheap one, that could solve your curiosity. I just don't see the value in them.[crazy]
