Update: Friday Evening
Now the forecast from Meteorologist Geoff Fox and Storm Team 8.
I thought I'd heard everything... until the Weather Service issued a
Low
Water Advisory for Long Island Sound earlier today. Say what? As a
landlubber, I couldn't figure out how 'blowout tides' might be a
problem.
Here's the setup. The strong and persistent northwest winds have blown
water out of Long Island Sound! It will equalize over time, but right
now,
the Western Sound is a little light. It's not noticeable until low
tide.
This afternoon's tides cycle was a few feet below normal. Again, for
us
landlubbers, that's a few feet lower than normal depth. It can bring
the
shoreline very far out into what's normally shallow water.
For boaters, these extremely low tides mean extra care must be taken to
make sure moorings are sufficient to hold a boat or ship in place
without
doing damage. For birds, today has opened up a feast, as normally
unexposed spots are revealed. Our photographer, Ken Melech, spent a
little
time at New Haven Harbor, marveling as the gulls filled their bellies.
The wind will be down by tomorrow and the tide will return to normal.

.TONIGHT: Clear and cold. Lows 5 to 15.
TOMORROW : Thickening Clouds. Possible flurries or light snow at
night.
Highs near 30.
SUNDAY: Cloudy, possible flurries, or some light snow. Highs in low to
mid-30s.
MONDAY: Sunny. Highs in the teens.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. High mid 30s.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Highs near 40.
THURSDAY: Rain/snow. Highs in the mid 30s.
FRIDAY: Fair. Highs upper 30s.
