Live Minnows VS Dead ones which do you use? - Profishing - 01-16-2007
I use both live or dead i find it really doesnt make a difference but then again ever lake is different in its own way.however i do like the salted dead ones they are way tuffer and seem to stay on the hook. What type do you use?

here in utah we're not allowed to use live minnows, so i use dead ones of course. i use either chub minnows or red-sided shiners. i have been disappointed with how mushy they get once they thaw out a bit. (dont stay on the hook that well) where do you get "salted minnows"?
also, i sometimes use just chunks of the minnows. would these salted minnows work better for cutting into pieces? (make stronger chunks?)

I use live, dead, and Josh's Jared Minnows. they come in a veriety of sizes.
they all work.
I like the live more because it allowes me to have a set line that I dont have to tend to untill I get a hit.
but when jigging Josh's is the berries when it comes to staying on the hook, they are almost rubber like. in the jar they last a long time.
I have caught as many as a dozen crappie on one Josh's minnow. I use the 2 inch for crappie, cutting them in half and tipping my jig with it. dosnt matter heads or tails, both work well. I did pick up some 4 inch ones, but never found a use for them.

I use neither,just hair & a hook & drill more slabs& gills then I can shake a stick at.

[black][size 3]I have used the home made salted kind, and the Josh's preserved kind and found that they also work pretty well. If the minnows are not frozen properly, the get mushy upon thawing out. And if they are frozen, thaw and then refrozen, they will self destruct the next time they thaw and be relatively useless as anything except chum - which is also illegal in this area.[/size][/black]

I use "Bait Cure" Special Borax Formula.
after you go out fishing with your live minnows and you have a bunch left, its time to salt and cure. "we are not allowed to release them in to the water in michigan"

this works with minnows, eggs, roe, hering, leaches.
after cured you refridgerate and they last for a long time (months), freeze they last for a long long time, (a year or better).
It takes 10-12 hours to cure, you do have to cut the roe in to usable sizes before you start.
the cure will firm up your bait so it is useable.
