Saturday Whitefish Slaughter Fest at Bear Lake! -with pics - BearLakeFishGuy - 12-02-2006

[black]OK, I've been harping on this and explained many times that the time to catch whitefish on Bear Lake is now, not later..... N-O-W! Well, as promised here they are. It took all of 1.5 hours to catch 20 fish and then we caught and release a few more just looking for cutthroat. We could have caught cutthroat but my friend who drove up from SLC and wanted to be home by noon! Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning. We fished the east side (any rocky areas is good, and I will not give away my specific spot) and the fish were thick! Yeah, it was only 5 above zero, the wind was swirling and the lake-effect snow was falling making ambient conditions pretty miserable, but the hot fishing more than made up for it. This is the cooler with our limit.

These are the two hearty boys that braved the cold temps, wind and snow on Saturday morning. By the time we got to my house at 10:00am the sun was out and the temp was a balmy 20 degrees!

These were the "weapons of doom" that slayed the fish. 1/8 oz, jigs with 1.5" tails fished on bottom in 8' of water [inline DSCF0178.JPG]
This isn't rocket science boys, just some plain 'ol fish harvesting fun! Can you guess what will be on my plate for breakfast tomorrow with a couple of eggs, hashbrowns and toast!

You guys are real "He men", those are some cold temps. Good report Scott, sounds like the fish are thick. Should be great fishing for some cutts and mack soon.

Scott,

I just got back from there, only fished an hour or so from shore. Lots of snags; I really need to get my boat out.

I only caught 1. I am going to hit this week again.

[black]That cold weather is a pain though. Boats have a hard time deciding if they want to cooperate and start. Also for those that are interested, the marina is starting to freeze up. The main channel is still open but the areas between the docks are frozen. I didn't see any bubblers going in the marina either. [/black]

[black]The ramp is also clear but has plenty of ice on it. Be careful walking down on it, especially near the water where trailers go in and out. Remember that if your trailer has brake drums, it can freeze the tires solid and not allow them to spin. Before you jump out of the truck, drive slowly around the parking lot to try and allow all the water to drain out first. The same holds true with truck brake drums. Better to not stick your vehicle in the water if possible.[/black]

Water temp on the main lake is 41-42 degrees. So for those who want BL to freeze, it's got a good way to go before that happens.
