Float Tubes and the Gorge - Majja - 08-23-2006
Being new fishing out of a Float tube or Pontoon boat I was wondering if is possible or even feasible that one can go up and catch good size macs on the gorge, or do you need a boat to be able to cover huge amounts of water to find MR. Mac.

It can be done. Last time I was up there I saw a guy in a personal pontoon boat (with a dog on board, no less!) jig one up in Swim Beach. That was about 3 weeks ago. I think he had a little motor on his. He was a hundred yards or so away, so I didn't get a good luck, but it appeared to be a hefty fish.

You can also catch some nice Rainbows and Bass from your tube. Just be careful with boaters buzzing you and watch the weather very close. You can have big winds hit without much warning! Keep closer to shore and you will be fine.

I really want to fish the Gorge for macs from a personal pontoon! I think it would be a blast. Either the Linwood humps or Swim Beach. I definitely would want a electric or a tow from a boat! hehehe

nothing is impossible.. but if you see a cloud comming get off the water fast!!!! if you launch at swim you can padle down along the cliff and get to the macks. about 3/4,s the way down the cliff there is a litle bay behind big boulders. if the wind comes in it will protect you from dieing. you just might have to sit out there for along time.

That's good advice, CROSSINEYES. That wind can come roaring down that cove at Swim Beach (and Linwood) without any warning. Once you start feeling any serious rippling, especially in late morning or early afternoon, get off while the gettin's good.

fish on the southern end of the lake and there is plenty of access to deep water with structure and the wind is not nearly as big of a concern. I have done it many times. Have yet to land any really big ones though.

The easiest place to fish would be around Mustang Ridge or the islands near the Dam. "Launch" from Mustang boat ramp, or from the visitor center at the dam. If you try the bigger water around Swim Beach or Linwood, just watch the wind like everyone is saying. Linwood bay is LOADED with fish for the next few months, but go out in the morning and get off at the first sign of a mid-day or early afternoon ripple out of the west. With any kind of decent fish finder, you'll be on fish all morning in the middle of Linwood.

Sounds like you have gotten some great info that you can use on the gorge.Here is a little more from somes one that fishes from a boat.Please if you are going to be on the water during low light times.Make youself as visiable as possible to boaters.I seen a guy in a kayak just about get ran over not to long ago.

Thanks for all the good info. I was just more or less curious if I would ever get a shot at soem of the decent Macs one of these days. I am always up for a challenge.
Luke no plans to tube the Gorge yet, how ever I am going flyfishing on the Green on teh 9/16.

I guess if I were out there in a float tube I'd want to make sure the bass boat jockeys and mack-heads could see me. You can always just shoot the PWCs. [
