powell first timer, need tips - fencekid - 05-31-2006
well after talking about it for years, and seeing all the sweet posts lateley, i have decided that this is the year to hit lake powell. we'll be heading for wahweap marina on the 15th of june and will be there over the weekend. i would love to head down there with a good idea of where to go and what to use this time of year. no houseboat i'm afraid, but we will be bringing the bayliner. looking forward to catching a hella fish so if you powell regulars could help me out, i'd sure apprciate it. laters

senkos, tubes, and grubs- shad and crawfish colors
topwaters-shad pattern
cranks- shad pattern
anchovies for chumming and bait fishing
carp meat works too good for cats also.
Please release all the largemouths you catch should be enough stripers walleye and smalll smallies bluegill and crappie to eat

] I am trying to get a trip going in june too.If its stripers you are after start a chum oil slick.Drift and make them come to you.Get a mesh net like one of those laundry bags blend some anchovies freeze them in a bag and keep them frozen till you get to your fishing area a couple of bags of dry ice will usually last you 2 days.I used it and man they hung around the boat and waited for me to bait a hook with a 1/3 chunk of an anchovie and they would fight over it.As for other species i never targeted them there but i would catch walleyes and smallies trolling shad crankbaits in 20 feet of water.Also i always fished moki canyon this time of year especially in the mornings.Good luck

]Fencekid, I hate to say this but go to waynes words and spend some time going through the posts and asking some questions. Those guys on that site are all really good about sharing just like the guys are here. You will gain alot of insite from that site for Powell. There is alot of info that comes in for the Wahweap area where you are going.

I was there a couple of weeks back, and we caught a boatload of stripers each day. We didn't catch any real big ones, but in talking to guys at the fish cleaning stations, the big ones were being caught across from Wahweap. They were catching 6 to 10 pounders by the carmel colored rocks right across the bay. Check with the guys at the cleaning stations on the way in. It's a good place to get the advice you need, at the time you are fishing.
