Hi there TubeN2,
You'll be able to answer better than anyone ....... if anybody can .... well except for Van Zant maybe!
Being forced against my will to go on trips that are primarily for those creatures 20,000 leagues under the sea,
Please let me know of any nicknames of some of the rock-fish species we both encounter when going 200 feet+! I know Salmon Grouper = Bocaccio, Reds = Vermillion, Chuckle Heads = Copper Rockfish, Starrys are Starrys, Chillipeppers are Chillipeppers, Treefish, Barberpoles, etc.
How about some other species of rockfish like the Goggle-eyes = ???

Here is the basics on most of the Rockies the we "Rock Dip" for. Some of them can be found in shallow (10fathoms) as well as deep (up to current legal depths0 of 60 fathoms. Of course the deeper ones are generally a little larger.
Bocaccio= Salmon Grouper= Bocas=Boca-chi chi
Red Snapper=Reds=Vermillions=Tomato Bass
Copper Rockfish=Chuckle Heads=Chucks=the ones that won't die
Treefish=Avon Bass=Mick Jaggar Bass=Lipstick Bass
Flag Rockfish=Barber Poles=Convict Bass (for the stripes)=50/50 Bass
Redbanded Rockfish=Strawberries N Cream
Brown Rockfish=Brown Bass (not to be
with the ones that hang around with the Charmin Grouper. Blue Rockfish=Blue Bass
Olive Rockfih=Johnny Bass
Starry Eye Rockfish=Boscoes=Starries
Green Spotted Rockfish=Salsa Bass
Green Blotched Rockfish=Strawberries
Green Striped Rockfish=Green Weenie
Rosy Rockfish=Skittles=Rosies
Bank Rockfish=Bankies=Bank Perch
Speckled Rockfish=Sugar Bass
Chilepepper Rockfish=Chiles
Cowcod Rockfish=Cow=OMG! There goes my JP! (off limits)
Canary Rockfish=Tweety Bass (off limits)
Yellow Eye Rockfish=Looky Loo (off limits)
Black Rockfish=Afro Bass
Black Speckled Rockfish=Pepper Bass
Tiger Rockfish=Little Tony(Tony the Tiger)
Black and Yellow Rockfish=Tar Baby=Tar Bass

There are a few more but the are rare in our area.

See .... I said I suspected you were the rockfish king! Now it is undisputed by anyone who would dare to challenge your highness! I feel ok because I know that this info came off the top of your head and you wouldn't feel encouraged to do research (which we both would normally feel obligated to do if a reader asked and we didn't know).
I also suspect that you know every blasted crab, crusty creature, gooey, slimy, non-form creature that haunts piers and jetties from Morro Bay to San Diego too BUT .... I don't wanna know! ha ha ha

I've always felt that us Salty Dawg/Pier Rats can't gain anything from our own personal knowledge if we don't share it with others. Of course, there are still the know-it-alls out there that don't care to share as much or little that they know.
I was always taught to share. It helps to keep my head from swelling like a Pin Cushion (Puffer Fish).[cool]
