Spinnerbait Problem - Snags_Alot - 07-21-2005 [pirate] I keep loosing my spinnerbaits..they won't stay on my line. I have a swivel hook at the end of my line....the spinnerbait has an open loop on it....Any tricks to stop this from happening? Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds to me like the open spinner isn't the problem as much as getting snagged and breaking off. I am assuming your knots are holding and if that is the case a good product to try is the Never Snag (or something like that). I have used these and casted straight into huge messes of twigs, weeds , etc ,, and they work. One site that has them is [url "http://www.guardhook.com/"]http://www.guardhook.com/[/url]. There are others out there but these outa do the trick. You can buy different sizes and types and they will work on just about any lure in your arsenal. Try tying directly to the line instead of relying on the snap swivel to make things quicker. I always had a really tough time with that. As a novice fisherman I relied heavily on those and now I only use them when fishing with snelled hooks or leaders. Another trick, if you want to continue to use the snap swivel would be to take a wire twist and wrap it around the bend area of the arm on the spinnerbait and then use some superglue to hold it there. That way there's a lot less room for the snap swivel to move around on the spinnerbait's arm. I never seen a spinner lure with an open loop. What brand of lure are you using?[/size][/green][/font][/center] [signature] Re: [Dryrod] Spinnerbait Problem - Snags_Alot - 07-22-2005 [ ![]() [signature] Re: [DrownedDesertRat] Spinnerbait Problem - Snags_Alot - 07-22-2005 [ ![]() [signature] Re: [theangler] Spinnerbait Problem - Snags_Alot - 07-22-2005 [ ![]() I have to get me some of those...thanks [signature] Re: [Snags_Alot] Spinnerbait Problem - aku94 - 07-22-2005 [reply] [pirate] I keep loosing my spinnerbaits..they won't stay on my line. More likely than not, your spinners are getting snagged on acquatic vegetation, then snapping line. I religously use swivel hooks and that is the only reason why I have lost anything. You should consider trying one of the following things to avoid your prediciment: 1. Use a bobber or float if practical. 2. Reduce the weight of your rig, so you don't sink to as deep a depth. 3. Find a new fishing location, that does not have aquatic vegetation[ ![]() As for the weight reduction, I just recently read an aritcle about that in Outdoor Life . They recomended not exceeding 1/4 to 3/8 ounce where there is known aquatic vegetation. I would use that with caution, because I have run into problems even with those amounts in areas wih vegetation. [ ![]() [signature] Re: [Snags_Alot] Spinnerbait Problem - davetclown - 07-23-2005 I have tied a few spinner baits, what it sounds like to me is part of the wire has broken off or you received a peice that had not been caught by inspection, since they are made by machien some times they do get passed that way. no body is perfect nor is a machein. the other end of the loop should have been tucked in under thread or wire or a bead to close the loop. I havent seen your lure so I dont know if you can re constitute it by means of shorting it or replacing the stainless steal wire or simply closing the loop with a pair of pliers. if you throw it on a scaner and cover it with a peice of paper towl we could diagnose the problem correctly and conclusively direct you to the proper solution..... sory, I just had to use a fifty dollar word before the day was out...[ ![]() [signature] Re: [Snags_Alot] Spinnerbait Problem - davetclown - 07-23-2005 here is the demo model I use on my youth fishing programs to demonstrate the construction of a simple spinner bait. if the problem is with the swivel snap there should be a brass clip to tuck the end of the "U" loop in to or a wire loop to tuck the end of the "U" loop in. if you are using the latter you may want to swich to a quality brand with the brass catch plate. (I have and continue to use both) you can avoid the whole problem if you use a swivel barrol insted of a snap. when you use a barrol swivel you tie about a two foot peice of line to tie your lure on to using a polimer knot.... If you need a pic of both rigs let me know and I will scan a couple for you.... [signature] Re: [davetclown] Spinnerbait Problem - DrownedDesertRat - 07-23-2005 I believe SnagsA-Lot is using these: ![]() "Using a leader can be a problem when fishing spinnerbaits. Some have no eyelet, just an R-shaped bend in their wire shafts. They slide up a leader's snap-swivel. To alleviate this, wrap a thin strand of wire several times around the R-bend to create an eyelet to hold the snap in place." (taken from an article by Luigi De Rose, titled "Bass Lures for Pike"). [signature] Re: [DrownedDesertRat] Spinnerbait Problem - davetclown - 07-23-2005 I had one of them a long time ago and just thought it was a manfacturing mistake lol. I took mine and placed the top part of the R in a vise and raped the blade peice aroud the other one full rotation or two... its been a long time.. Thanks for the clairification.... Had a completely different picture set in my mind. Haven't had the problem that was discussed but like the idea posted by DDR.
