Re: [bassturd] rod reel setup - Jan - 09-08-2002

A little more info would be nice, I'd fish the bass with a deckhand style Calstar 270 with a Newell 220-5 or a 229-5 www.charkbait.com

Thanks for your reply, I dont have alot of info for you becouse I am still pretty new at the sport but I really like fishing for calico and sand bass around the huntington flats area. I see different setups being used and wonderd if there is a good one for local bass fishing, thanks for your help. Tom

Re: [bassturd] rod reel setup - klymons - 09-12-2002

It's amazing to me how everybody likes to complicate things when it comes to fishing. This guy I work with insists that he has use a Newell reel and a custom-wrapped rod to fish for sand/calico bass. So he spends over $300 to pull on a two-pound sandie! And this guy is so poor he can't even pay his bills! As for me, I use a great custom rod I purchased at a fisherman's swap meet for ten bucks! As for the reel I use, it's a Shimano Corsair I bought used for thirty bucks. In other words, you don't need a fancy set-up. A fairly decent medium/heavy freshwater rod and with reel to match will do the job quite nicely and costs well under $100. Of course, if you have money to burn. . .Anyway, I hope this helps you pick out a good set-up.[cool]

Re: [klymons] rod reel setup - bassturd - 09-12-2002

thats makes sence, I think it is more the length and action I was wondering about. I am always checking out used gear its wear you can get some good deals, thanks for your reply. Tom

Re: [bassturd] rod reel setup - klymons - 09-13-2002

A good saltwater bass rod--in my opinion--should be at least 7', with a medium action. This is a good all around size for fishing on the party boats--whether you're throwing the plastics or fly-lining an anchovy. If the fish seem to be further away from the boat, an 8' or even a 9' steelhead-type rod would be better for long casts.

Hey there bassturd,

If you're not a jackpot fisherman, and you can go when the cattleboat loads are comparitively lite (so as not to piss off the poor frustrated rock cod guys that can't use a 10 hook set any longer.) get a 7', heavy or medium heavy action flippin'/juggin' stick, an abu garcia 5600 spooled with 20lb or so fireline or ironsilk w/6 to 15lb fluorocarbon leader (you can use heaver/larger diameter leaders with this stuff as it has such low visibility)fishing bait, leadheads w/swimbaits, trap rigs for bait or medium size/weight jigs. This rig handles most halibut, barracuda, sandies and calicos and an occasional yellow. If you'be got your own boat/kayak go lighter.

Joe you liar!!!!![Tongue]

You only wish you had that setup, Joe has a Seeker thats like 7 1/2 foot with a used Diawa SL 20.

In truth I have a Graphiter 900xl and an international 975 or I use my Penn 525 since I dumped my seeker 270 and Newell P220 in the drink while float tubing[Sad]

and yes aaron, i do have a seeker inshore series, but 8 1/2 foot, with, yes, an sl 20. but it works. it gets the job done. I'm looking for another reel though. the rod is nice. what you said earlier came off harsh. you are a brutal person aaron. you never would have been like that if you hadn't moved to los alamitos. haha just kidding.

A good set up would be a California Calico Special, with a Newell 220 or an SL 20, the whole set up would cost you about 200 which is pretty reasonable unless you could get the reel used for like 60, because the rods are anywhere from 100 to 120

Ohh ya, I got my Custom Wrapped Calico Special from my Grandpa today[Smile]
