NORTHWEST AREA - Bassmaster-ND - 06-02-2004 [#0000ff]NORTHWEST AREA [/#0000ff]ABIQUIU LAKE Windy weather was the big culprit for slow fishing action over the past weekend but it should improve with calmer weather. Expect fishing for catfish to continue to improve especially early and late in the day. Use worms, liver and dough bait. For smallmouth bass, try crank baits, tubes, senkos, salt craws, jigs and jerk baits and expect to pick up some good size brown trout and walleye with these same lures. We're expecting walleye action to pick up especially for those trolling bottom bouncer/crawler rigs and crank baits. On cloudy, windy days fish the shallow brushy areas with grubs and whistler jigs. BLUEWATER LAKE While trout fishing has slowed somewhat, fishing for catfish has picked up but is still sporadic. Those doing best are using shrimp, while a few are also being taken on dough bait and liver. BURNS CANYON LAKE Fishing is fair using spinners, spoons and power bait for trout. CHAMA RIVER Water is flowing at 385cfs below Abiquiu and 398cfs below El Vado. Fishing below El Vado is fair using spinners and night crawlers for trout. Fishing in the river above El Vado is very good using hoppers, night crawlers and silver spinners for brown trout. Fishing below Abiquiu is slow. EL VADO LAKE Howling winds and cold temperatures kept anglers away this past weekend with only a few braving the weather. Those who managed to catch a few trout were fishing near the dam and on the west side of Pinon Beach. They were using power bait and worms. FENTON LAKE Fishing is fair using worms, salmon eggs, prop flies and wooly buggers for trout. Anglers using worms and salmon eggs had the best luck over the past weekend. HERON LAKE Bank fishing is slow-to-fair using power bait, salmon eggs and corn/egg combinations for small trout. JEMEZ WATERS Stone fly activity is in full swing along the Guadalupe. Stimulators, caddis, parachute adams, hoppers and bead head prince nymphs are all providing good trout action here as well as on the Jemez, East Fork, San Antonio and Clear Creek. Salmon eggs, worms, power bait and small spinners also proved productive for anglers over the past weekend. MANZANO LAKE There were no reports from anglers this week. NAVAJO LAKE Kokanee fishing continues to improve with several taken this past week by anglers trolling christmas tree/spinner/corn combinations at four-to-five colors. Crappie fishing is still good using crappie jigs, small tubes and minnows. Fishing for bass is fair using tubes, senkos, jerk baits, crank baits and salt craws. Most are still being taken in less than 10 feet of water. Catfish anglers are doing well using liver, shrimp and dough bait. There were no reports on other species. RAMAH LAKE Prop flies, bead head wooly buggers and worms are proving to be the best baits for trout, small bass and a few catfish. A few trout are also being taken on power bait and salmon eggs. SAN JUAN Water flow below Navajo Dam is 366cfs. Fishing is good using burlap nymphs, sparkle worms, midges, baetis emergers, bright colored desert storms, RS2s and parachute adams for trout. Fishing on the bait waters is good using night crawlers, gold spinners, spoons, garlic cheese, salmon eggs, power bait and worms for trout. [signature] |
