outboard tuneup - addicted2fishin - 05-04-2004
Hi. I don't know if this is the best place to post this, but it seems to be the most common place to post anything.
I have an older boat with a 1973 Evinrude 135hp on the back. The boat has done great over the last couple of years, but I would like to get it looked over before taking it out this year. I haven't used it since July of last year thanks to a little old lady that pulled out right in front of me (she was ok, thank goodness, but the truck was in the shop for a couple of weeks) then a deer that jumped right into the side of my truck causing another $4k in damages.
Anyway, the two things I would like to have looked at are the impeller and the lower unit seal. The output from the impeller doesn't seem to flow as much water as I would think it should, and I saw a little oil come out through the holes near the bottom of the motor. The impeller isn't pushing out any less than it has over the past couple of years, and I don't know a whole lot about these motors, but I would think it should put out more. It has never overheated on me at all. Also, I don't know that the oil I saw wasn't the excess I get out of the carbs when I just shut down the motor without running all of the gas out. It could have just run down through things.
So....anyone know of a reputable place or person to look this over. It has never had a problem running or anything. I just don't want to find out that it was a small problem that ended up ruining my engine because I didn't get it taken care of.

I'm not sure where you live, but Lee's Marine in Logan is top notch. I've also had work done at Rogers Marine in Centerville. They've always been good to me.

I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING...I HAVE THE PARTS FOR THAT MOTOR I GOT FROM YOU, AND WHEN I GET IT ALL PUT BACK TOGETHER IN NEXT FEW DAYS WAS WONDERING WHERE TO TAKE IT TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, JUST TO SEE IF ANYTHING ELSE NEEDS ATTENTION.
I HAVE HEARD BEVANS MARINE, AND I HAVE EMAILED LEES MARINE, MAYBE HE HAS A BUDDY IN SLC IN THE BIZ THAT HE WOULD REFER US TOO....I HATE TO ASK ONE ABOUT ANOTHER BUT LOGAN IS A LONG WAY TO GO TO JUST HAVE A MOTOR FIRED UP AND LOOKED OVER. SO ILL EMAIL EM AND ASK. I WILL LET YOU KNOW AS WELL HERE WHEN I GET INFO BACK...USUALLY OVERNIGHT.

call them and ask for references, just like the car insurance commercial..lol. tell em you dont wanna pay too much...any shop should have some references, also ask if they are bonded and insured, so if they do goof up their insurance will take care of you and get your stuff fixed even if it is elsewhere. or you can call the better business bearuae and ask them if they have any info on them.....good bad...or ugly. i think all you need for that is the phone number there. and the BBB will take it from there.

Danzilla from this site is the guy you need to talk to or PM him if he does not respond to this post. He has changed a lot of impellers and he lives in SLC. I know he is always working on some ones boat from BFT but I guess it depends on how busy he is. WH2

Got email from lees marine, up in Logan, they dont have any affiliates down here. noddah. they were nice enough to give me some advice of what mix to run in that motor.....what ratio did you run addicted? The pros told me to try a 25:1 ratio and see if that goes well. heres hoping...

I think it was around a 25:1 ratio. I just ran whatever was marked on it. Like I said, we only ran it for a few minutes in a garbage can full of water. When you run it, listen to it carefully. If it develops a rattling sound, that's bad.
Oil mix isn't enough. However, if you throttle it up and it bogs down, the mix may be too rich. Two-cycles are tricky beasts and I wish I knew more about them. (have 2 snowmobiles that desparately need tune-ups, too. But they are also 2 cycle and I don't know enough to do it myself.)[signature]
