South slope bears - catchinon - 09-28-2025 I bought a Harvest Objective spot and stalk bear permit this year. I was all set to hunt the La Sals but wanted to wait until the weather cooled down so I wouldn't have to worry about the meat and hide spoiling in the heat. Silly me! They filled their objective of 12 bears on the 14th. So I thought I would flip over to Elk Ridge but that was a little intimidating considering I would be going solo and don't know the area. So plan C is to go out to the Uinta Yellowstone to scout for elk and hunt for bears until the Any Bull season starts then on through the season. So can anyone help me out? I've been told that the Elkhorn Loop might be a good place to start. We've taken a few antlerless elk down low there on late hunts, and a cow and calf way up high by Chipeta Lake. Does anyone know a good area to look for bears? Or bears and elk together? Any help would be appreciated. I was all set to hunt the In all my years of hunting big game in Utah, starting in 1976 in this state, I've never seen a bear while hunting, so you might be in for a tough hunt Craig. IMO, your best bet would be to hire a guide, that has dogs. In that South slope area, up dry fork canyon, I talked to a guide there, that was hunting bears with dogs. The Yellowstone drainage is to the West of Dry fork but I would guess there are guides in that area too. You could also talk to the DWR, they are a good source of info. Good luck. RE: South slope bears - Cowboypirate - 09-28-2025 I have seen a few bears on the Whitney drainage and the rocky sea area but that is over a lot of years and some serious horse time horse time. I could not point to a specific place in the Uintas. Now the book cliffs, ya seen some and more |
