Downrigger help - lovetofish - 08-16-2025

I just purchased a Cannon electric Mag 5 downrigger. I'm trying to disconnect the power cable on the downrigger, but the motor-end plug and the battery-end plug are locked together or stuck. Any ideas on how to separate the two.

It just pulls apart. 2 pins on one side and 2 slots on the other side male/female. Might be corroded in there causing it to stick. I'd bend it back and forth both ways to see if you can free it up. Maybe put a little screwdriver blade under the rubber boot to pry it apart. Use a little dielectric grease to prevent corrosion in the future.

Grab both plugs (not cable) and flex them back and forth (think break spaghetti noodles in half) while you pull hands away from each other.

Most new Cannon DR connections are like that and Dubob's method is the same thing I do, they make them tight so it's a solid connection. Mine has the same issue, not a big problem to have a good connection like that but it does make getting it apart a little bit of a problem, until you get use to it.

I've been doing what you've all said but it's almost like they are glued together. I'm waiting on a response from an email that I sent to Cannon. I'll keep trying to wiggle the plug and see if I can finally work it apart. Thanks for the responses.

SUCCESS!!! Finally got the cables apart. Wow, that was hard to do, it was like they were glued together. I don't understand why they come from the factory like that. I bought some Dielectric so I will put that to use and hopefully it won't be so bad going forward.

Glad you got them apart; they can be a pain when they are new like that.

Thanks for posting. I will put a Cannon Mag10 downrigger on my boat this winter. Tips like this good to know.
